A Handy Guide To Buying The Best 32" HDTV

If you are in the market for a new 32" HDTV then you have come to the right place. I have put this guide together to help you find out what you need to know about HDTV's, and the best place to buy them. We have something for everyone here, whether you're on a tight budget or simply looking for the best TV you can buy regardless of the cost. The guide will also provide you with a bit of technical info to help make your decision as easy possible.

High Definition Television - Technical Info

How Does It Actually Work?

Put simply, High Definition Television (HDTV) offers the highest possible picture quality in the home entertainment world. Instead of using the traditional 576 lines to show a TV picture, HDTV uses 720 or 1080 lines. In addition to this, the pixels in each of those lines are closer together. The end result is a hugely improved picture, clearer, crisper and more colour definition.

It's also very important to remember that the quality of your picture greatly depends on your broadcast source, as well as the quality of your TV. You can watch Freeview (576 lines) on a LCD screen, but the quality will not be as good as Sky HD (1080 lines). An LCD TV will actually scale whatever source it is fed to fit the screen. So a broadcast in full HD (1080p) is always going to look the best.

How To Decide On 720p, 1080i or 1080p

What's The Difference?

Broadcast pictures for HDTV come in two formats. The first is 720p ("p" stands for progressive), which is an image comprised of 1280 lines horizontal by 720 vertical lines. It shows the whole image in a single frame (progressive).

The second is 1080i ("i" stands for interlaced), which measures 1920 lines horizontal by 1080 lines vertical and is displayed as two parts that are "interlaced". You will get slightly more detail with 1080i, but the interlaced image is not as smooth as a progressively scanned one.

1080p is the absolute best format for HD, although at the moment it is not used by broadcasters. Currently the only format you can view 1080p (Full HD) on is Blu-ray movies or the latest games consoles (Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 elite).
