70s Kung Fu Movies: Classic!

The 1970s saw the rise of Kung Fu films. During this time some of the best movies burst onto the scene with spectacular fight scenes and fast-paced action. Here are five of the best movies from that era.

The Top Five Best 70s Kung Fu Movies

  • The 36th Chamber of Shaolin - also known as "Shaolin Master Killer". A student witnesses the slaughter of family and friends by the occupying Manchu. He travels to Shaolin Temple and seeks admittance and training in Kung Fu. This is widely acknowledged to be one of the best Kung Fu movies ever.
  • Snake in the Eagle's Shadow - this (together with Drunken Master) is Jackie Chan's breakout film. Comedy and Kung Fu combine in this movie about a janitor at a Kung Fu school learning the Snake style from a wandering beggar. The beggar is actually a Kung Fu master in disguise, hiding from the rival Eagle Claw society.
  • Drunken Master - one of the most famous movies of the genre, starring Jackie Chan as Wong Fei Hung. The juvenile delinquent (played by Chan) is punished by being sent to learn martial arts from Beggar So. The transformation from ne'er-do-well to Kung Fu master-who-beats-the-bad-guy is highly entertaining and funny.
  • Master of the Flying Guillotine - seriously, a flying hat that beheads people? What more can a Kung Fu movie fan ask for? The One-Armed Boxer (from a previous film) is hunted by a blind assassin armed with the deadly and awesome Flying Guillotine. The assassin kills any unfortunate one-armed men he encounters in his search for the One-Armed Boxer.
  • Five Deadly Venoms - A dying Kung Fu master sends out his student to find five of the master's former students. The master fears the unique styles he taught may be used for evil. The five styles are the Centipede, Snake, Scorpion, Lizard, and Toad. The final student must identify which of the five are good guys, team up with them, and stop the bad guys!

Honorable Mention

Enter the Dragon

This is an iconic movie and rightly so. The fight sequences say it all, there is no need to explain how great this movie is. So why isn't it at the top of this list? Simply because it doesn't strictly fit in with the other movies on this list. If this were a Best Martial Arts Movies list Enter the Dragon would be at the top.

I was expecting to see Enter the Dragon here. I haven't heard of those you've mentioned, so maybe I should do some catching up after all these years :)

I was debating with myself about whether to include Bruce Lee's work. I think the style and feel of his movies are a bit different from Kung Fu films, he's in a category all his own.

I'm not familiar with individual Kung Fu movies, but have watched a few years ago. My hubby was a TV programmer who had to find non-network programs to run, usually late at night. For a couple years he ran "Kung Fu Theater" at midnight each night and we discovered there were a LOT of Kung Fu fans out there -- our friends were always teasing Bob about the movies, knowing he was responsible for them being aired on our local TV. :-)
