Best Air Purifier for Pets

The obvious first choice for avoiding an allergic reaction is to avoid contact with the problem animals wherever possible. If you're visiting friends with such pets try taking antihistamines a short while before you visit.

Should you feel you must keep a pet you're allergic to, try to establish no-pet zones where possible, which should always include the bedroom, and another room such as a living room or conservatory. Where possible, remove carpet from rooms to make cleaning easier, as carpet tends to trap pet hair.

Always wash your hands and face after contact with the animals and don't let them get too close to your face.

Dust and vacuum frequently to remove pet allergens. Wipe down painted surfaces too. Vacuum furniture such as sofas and chairs; if you can keep pets off these areas, that will help. If not, try covering with a removable dust sheet which can easily be washed, and ensure that this is washed frequently.

Keep dog/cat items clean, especially those items which have been licked or played with.

Groom pets frequently to remove loose fur before it floats around.

"Since moving to Virginia, I spend at least a month every spring feeling like I'm waking up with a bad cold. I had promised myself that this year, I would try a good-quality air purifier. "I have tried four other air cleaners that turned out to be a waste of money. So when I got this unit I had little expectation about its effectiveness. BOY was I surprised! I set this up in my bedroom and after 24 hrs ALL my allergy symptoms disappeared. I didn't believe it, so being the skeptic that I am, I had to test it further. I turned the unit off. "This Honeywell HHT-011 tabletop air purifier turned out to be just what I needed. It sits on a dresser in the bedroom. "I bought this filter to help with my pet allergies and it definitely improves the air quality in my room. I suffer with mild asthma and use this filter after hoovering and dusting to keep the air clean. It has a low and high setting, and a timer for 1hr, 2hr and 4hr which I find useful. You definitely can hear it working but I can still have it on when I go to bed and it doesn't affect my sleep."

"I purchased the Vicks V-9071 Hepa Air Purifier in the midst of one of the worst years for hayfever sufferers for a long time! It was the middle of June and we were basking in a heat wave - difficult to imagine now but we were! Because the windows were open during the day due to the heat, sleeping was difficult and I had developed a constant cough and wheezing due to the pollen in the air. The Vicks purifier helped enormously and within a couple of nights my cough had disappeared and I was sleeping like a baby. It is very quiet, and I like the varying speeds so you can put it on high for the first couple of hours and then reduce it down afterwards. The air in the bedroom is really fresh and pure. I looked at other purifiers but this one was the most stylish and doesn't look obtrusive or ugly like the others did. It also keeps the dust down to a minimum on the furniture too. I can highly recommend this for all hayfever and allergy sufferers."

(REAL NAME) The Austin Air Healthmate is the best I've ever owned. One large unit is enough for our entire house. It reduces (or even eliminates) odors from our cat's litter box and makes the stale air in our home fresher when we return from a couple of days away. We run it in the bedroom at night and wake up feeling healthier than we did before we got one of these. It's quiet on the lowest setting, and a little loud but very powerful on the highest setting. There's easy maintenance (just vacuum the outside once a month). Replacement filters are a little on the expensive side (around $200), but well worth it. The salesperson that sold us ours said we'd have to replace the filter every five years. We run ours constantly and had to replace it after three years. I think the expense is still worth it, as the quality of this product cannot be matched by less expensive purifiers."
