A Young Adult In King Arthur's Court

Are you looking for great Arthurian books for teens? Then this is the list you're looking for. From the autobiography of Morgan le Fay to the gritty dark underside of Camelot, here are the best Arthurian YA books I can lay my hands on.

King Arthur and Sir Lancelot
William Morris

Maybe you're a teenager who enjoys fantasy and historical novels, watches BBC's Merlin on a regular basis, loves movies like King Arthur and Tristan & Isolde, or just wants something new to read. Or a parent looking for gift ideas for just such a teenager. Or a grown-up fan of Arthuriana who wants to share your interest with your kids -- or maybe a new book for yourself?

A Note To Parents

Although all the books featured here are classed as young adult, some of them do deal with darker themes. The Arthurian Legend itself involves a lot of violence and moral ambiguity, and many YA Arthurian novels touch on these subjects. If you're concerned about age appropriateness, you should check out the books yourself and discuss them with your child.

The Squire's Tales

Gerald Morris

Amazon Price: $12.29 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $16.00
Used Price: $2.22

Gerald Morris's series of Arthurian tales are a great read for middle grades, but witty and thoughtful enough for older readers to enjoy. Most of them give the traditional stories a fresh spin by retelling them from the viewpoint of a minor character, such as the aforementioned squire. The characters are well rounded and engaging, especially the often neglected female cast.

The King Arthur Trilogy

Rosemary Sutcliff

Amazon Price: $3.42 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $6.99
Used Price: $0.01

Sutcliff wrote "Sword at Sunset", a historical take on the Arthurian Legend for adults. Her trilogy for younger readers takes a more traditional approach, but the writing is just as flawless. The first book focuses on Arthur's rise and reign, the second on the Quest for the Holy Grail, and the third on the fall of the Round Table.

I am Morgan le Fay

Nancy Springer

Amazon Price: $2.67 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $6.99
Used Price: $0.01

Though not a personal favorite, Nancy Springer's book is noteworthy for focusing on a female character, Morgan le Fay, describing her childhood and youth, her education in magic, and how she ultimately becomes the villain of the piece. If you or your teen enjoy this book, don't miss the equally haunting companion volume, "I am Mordred".

Here Lies Arthur

Philip Reeve

Amazon Price: $4.48 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $8.99
Used Price: $0.39

I picked this book up on a whim, expecting it to be mediocre, and was blown away. Philip Reeve's cynical take on the legend is told from the viewpoint of Gwyna, an orphaned girl adopted by Merlin. The violence is fairly graphic at times, but it also has funny moments, surprising twists, and an interesting message about the nature of stories.

"And when they came to the sword that the hand held, King Arthur took it up."

The finding of Excalibur
N. C. Wyeth, 1922

The Winter Prince

Elizabeth E. Wein

Amazon Price: $3.49 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $6.99
Used Price: $0.01

One of my all-time favorites, Elizabeth Wein's novel deals with the alliances and rivalries between Arthur's children -- Medraut, Lleu and Goewin -- and the intrigues of his sister Morgause. Though intense and often dark, it's not as relentlessly grim as "Here Lies Arthur", and beautifully atmospheric. If you enjoy it, it's worth checking out the sequels, which veer farther from Arthurian canon and into the history of medieval Africa.
