Choosing the Best Baby Bath Tub

There are lots of great design features on baby bath tubs to help make it easy to bath babies from when they're newborn until they can comfortably fit into a bath tub.

Some features to look out for when choosing a baby bath tub include:

What kind of support is there for newborns and very young babies? Some of the best bath tubs have slings so you its so much easier to bath your baby. Others have supports to help babies until they can sit up unaided.

Can the bath tub fit over the sink to save your back when bathing the baby?

Is there are place to store soap and accessories at bathtime?

Is there a plug for easy drainage of water?

How long will the baby bath tub last for? Some baby bath tubs cater for babies until they are 6 months, others until they are 24 months. Obviously if you pick a bath which caters for older babies too, it has the advantage that you won't have to fill up a huge bath tube everytime you baby needs a bath when he/she gets older, just a smaller version. This is obviously quicker and saves water.

Some baths have a hook and can hang on the back of the door for storage which can be handy.

Read on for my top choice and review of the best bath tub for babies in 2012 as well as a few more options to choose from. There are also some tips for bathing a newborn baby at the end of the article.

Infant to Toddler Tub with Sling

The First Year's Infant To Toddler Tub with Sling, Blue

Amazon Price: $15.45 (as of 05/29/2012)Buy Now

This is the perfect baby bath tub that grows with your baby.

Firstly it grows with your baby. The attached sling is designed for newborn babies to sit in so its very easy to bath a newborn baby. When your baby gets a little older and bigger there is a backrest to support your baby. As your baby gets older, the backrest can be put upright so they are supported and sitting.

It will fit in your sink so you don't have to keep bending over to bath your baby. There is a plug in the bath so the water is easily drained and it changes color if the water is too hot. (However always check the water for yourself too). There is also built in caddy that will hold soap and accessories while you're bathing the baby.

In my opinion this is the one of the best baby bath tubs currently available in 2012.

Tips on Bathing a Newborn in a Baby Baby

It can be quite daunting to bath a small newborn baby. I have had two babies and I remember the feeling of having to bath them, the first few times. It can feel terrifying, as you have slippy hands and don't want to hurt them or drop them in the water. To help, here are some tips for bathing a newborn baby from a mother.

  • Get everything you need ready first. Make sure you have everything you need to hand. Towels, cotton wool, sponge, diapers, clean clothes for after the bath and any toiletries you wish to use. There's nothing worse than not having what you need as you can't go and get it once you are bathing the baby.

  • The first few times can be scary so have somebody with you for support.

  • Choose a time when your baby is fresh and awake. Also make sure they aren't hungry. A tired and hungry baby is more likely to get upset and cry.

  • Make sure your hands are warm before you undress your baby. Imagine cold hands all over your own body and the shock for the baby!

  • Make sure the room is warm for bathing your baby too.

  • The temperature of the bath should be comfortably warm but not too hot - remember a baby's skin is sensitive to temperatures. I always test it by putting my whole arm or elbow in the bath, if it feels comfortable to put in and keep it then it's normally a good temperature. Use a thermometer if you are unsure.

  • Clean a baby's face with cotton wool before the bath. It's hard to do in the bath with only one hand.

  • Change their diaper and clean the diaper area before the bath too.

  • I was advised that newborns don't need any bubble bath or soap at first, so I just bathed my babies with water. If you do use baby soap or cleanser make sure it's unperfumed and PH neutral. There are obviously lots of baby washes available.

  • Support your baby's neck and head with one hand while in the bath. Lower them into the water gradually so it's not a shock for them.

  • Clean their bodies with a sponge or flannel.

  • Lift your baby out of the bath and pat them dry with a towel. Newborn babies skin may be a little dry (especially if they were overdue) and I was advised to use olive oil on dry skin.

  • Once dry dress in clean clothes.
