Crib Quiz

Convertible Cribs Quiz (Retired)

3 out of 4 parents are buying a convertible crib. Are you?

Convertible cribs let you use the same piece of baby furniture from infanthood to adulthood. One purchase gives you a baby crib, then a toddler bed, and then a full bed. With the extra accessories and conversion kits, they can cost $200 (or more) more than standard wooden cribs. Is the convenience worth the extra dollars?

Other Types of Baby Cribs

Round Baby Cribs

Round baby cribs add a unique flair to modern nurseries. They combine all of the essential features and beauty of traditional cribs with a circular or oval footprint. Round cribs can be difficult to find, but they are worth the look. Many of these cribs come with canopies or bedding sets that coordinate with the rest of your nursery decor.

Corner Cribs

Corner cribs were once a popular option for saving space because they could be pushed up where two walls meet. They are shaped like a wedge, with two flat sides and a rounded front. New corner cribs are difficult to find, but some older models are still floating around.

Mini Cribs

Mini cribs take all of the safety and style of full-size cribs and condense them into a smaller piece of furniture. Because mini baby cribs are shorter in width and length, they are ideal for parents living in a one-bedroom apartment, for situations where the child will need to spend time away from the nursery, and for occasional use, such as at the grandparents' house.

Mini cribs come in two distinct styles:
- Portable cribs are some of the best baby cribs for parents on the go. These cribs fold up and can be packed into a carrier for taking on a vacation, car trip, or even just a quick stop down the street to the babysitter's house. They provide the baby with a comfortable, familiar environment but save mom and dad from the headache of having to disassemble a full-size crib.

- Traditional mini-cribs are the smaller cousins to regular baby cribs. Unlike the portable cribs, mini cribs are designed to be put together and left alone. They are not great for frequent packing and unpacking, although it can be done.

Worst Baby Cribs

Cribs to avoid

To keep your infant safe, use the tips below:

Do not purchase drop-side cribs. Baby cribs with drop sides can trap your child, pinch fingers and arms, and even lead to suffocation. Most manufacturers no longer produce these types of cribs. If you are looking at a used crib, make sure it does not have a drop side.

Conduct the soda can test. You should not be able to stick a soda can between the slats of a baby crib. If you can, that means that your infant could become stuck or even fall out.

Avoid cribs with cutouts in the headboard or footboard. Intricate designs may look nice, but they can lead to a number of hazards for small children.

If you wouldn't want it for your own bed, don't make it your baby's bed. Check all cribs for loose or broken slats, missing hardware, splinters, and sharp edges.

CPSC Infant and Child Product Recalls
Manufacturers make mistakes, but that's not reason to put your child at risk. Stay up to date on crib recalls using the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall list featured below.

If you are ever involved in a recall, don't panic.

1. Find a safe place for your child to sleep. Some recalls are initiated because installation and assembly instructions are confusing. If that is the case, confirm that your crib has been built properly and conforms to safety guidelines. If the crib is being recalled because it is dangerous, try borrowing a crib for a few nights until your crib can be fixed or replaced.

2. Contact the manufacturer to request a repair kit, replacement crib, or whatever remedy they are offering.
