My Grandmother's Banana Nut Bread
Ranked #3,969 in Food & Cooking, #75,734 overall
This Banana Nut Bread Is Special
Grandmothers are special people. My grandmother was extraordinary, at least, to me. She did all the jobs of a woman in her era and yet still worked outside the home as a teacher, a librarian and a minister's wife. She was forever in school getting one Masters Degree after another.
Some of my favorite childhood memories are bundled around her and her love. As her first grandchild and only granddaughter for 20 years, we had a special bond.
She always allowed me to choose what "goody" we would have from her vast collection of handwritten recipes. My favorite was her wonderful Banana Nut Bread that filled the house with that smell that only a grandmother's homemade love can.

In Her Own Words
The recipe card you see in this picture is the actual handwritten recipe card still used. My grandmother wrote on this card more than 35 years ago, so the edges are little "love worn".
Banana Nut Bread Recipe
Giving You Her Best
Serves 12
2 cups sugar
1 cup Crisco
3 eggs - large works best

1 cup nuts - she used walnuts
Cream sugar and Crisco
Add beaten eggs
Sift flour, soda, and salt together and add to creamed mixture
Add mashed bananas and mix well
Add nuts
Bake in loaf pans for 30 to 45 minutes at 350 degrees
Best Banana Nut Bread?
She said it was and our family agrees!
The back of the card has her notation saying it is the best she's ever made.
"This is the best banana nut bread I've ever made - Have used many recipes, but this is best!!"

20 Years Since I've Seen Her
I loved my grandmother and have missed her these 20 years since she left me. There are days when the nostalgia is almost too much to bear. It's as if a part of my heart was permanently ripped away when she could no longer stay with me in this world. She would have been 100 years old on December 10, 2009.
Here's to you Grandmama.

- I remember holding my grandfather's hand, and then asking him if he wanted to see what I learned in dance class that day. He always said yes. Neither of my grandmothers lived long enough for me to know them.

- Never knew either of my grandparents, but my Mom is the one who bequeathed recipes to me, and I've missed her since 1995. I honor her each day, but especially when I cook one of her recipes. Thanks for sharing this beautiful lens.

- I always looked forward to Grandma visiting or visiting her because it always meant we would be having her 12 egg pancakes for breakfast. They were worth getting up early for and they certainly held us until lunch time.
I love how you designed this using your Grandma's hand written recipe card, what a wonderful tribute to a great lady. The heart does not forget and hold on to our beloveds.

I can still remember and seemly taste even now at 53 as a child. My Grandmother on Mother's side, Ruby Presley, when I got to have sleepover visits, always promised as a child and older a nutritient yet home cooking like I got at home. Lol to the fullness that even in play time we would humor her as well. My cousin and I had set out out on our play table our tea sets and dishes for our make believe foods we would have. Normally at home I would have put marshmellows, chips, cookies, M&M's, or any little junk food I could talk my Mother out of in a small quanity. However my Grandmother decided to look in her refrigarator and heated up her left overs. Which was tasty at supper the night before. But as we giggled privately, and was sure to eat almost every bit to not hurt her feelings. We now sat down to now for real foods no make believe or junk foods for us. Dishes filled with, collar greens, blackeye peas, mashed potatoes, green beans, corn and cornbread. Most from their garden they grown themselves, as well as her flower gardens she loved. But the sweet tea added a real touch as afterall they were called tea cups. lol Gosh how I loved to go back and she do that again for me. As I see it would have been much easier for her to done the other but her kitchen was always filled with God's love and NO ONE ever left Maw-Maw's house hungry. She is in Heaven's Kitchen now teaching Angels' and other Children how to make even better varieties of Tea set cooking favorites. I am sure now even more profected and healthy as its grown there and plentious. Where God's gardens were thinking of her and smiled even to her make believe Tea Set play. I tried this for my own children and may as well my own Grandchildren. As well as making the homemade bread. But the greatest thing she ever feed anyone was the words of God and the way to Jesus. The greatest legacy I have truly loved to past down. Debbie Powers

- Your grandmother was extraordinary! I will definitely use this recipe. Banana bread is one of my ultimate foods. Just love it so much. My paternal grandmother was always baking. I loved her homemade bread the most. Grandma baked an angel food cake for every birthday celebration. I really miss having a grandmother in my life. Thanks for this wonderful tribute. :-)

- I was not able to spend time with my grandmothers but had an aunt that filled that role in my life. I loved 'helping' her with sewing projects! She also made the best home-canned apples with cinnamon. Thanks for a fun lens... angel blessed.

- Definitely voted for the ones with nuts! Thanks for sharing this recipe. I'm planning on baking for my grand mom who recently felt all the hassle when she heard about the DePuy Hip Replacement Recalls. I'm hoping that by spending some time with her, it would ease her anxieties.
