Fractals are a fascinating field of Mathematics in which patterns get repeated in ever smaller form. What's more, they turn out to describe very different 'chaotic' phenomena. This sort of math does not predict very well, but it does explain much - and leads to very beautiful pictures.

The books I selected on this page are mostly legible without too deep a knowledge of math.

So, what ARE fractals anyhow?

The Self-Made Tapestry: Pattern Formation in Nature

About the patterns in nature: why are unrelated things often shaped similarly? The mathematical understanding of fractals has helped answer this question - this book explains how with plenty of pictures and only a few equations.

Fractals: The Patterns of Chaos

Discovering a New Aesthetic of Art, Science, and Nature

Very well illustrated introduction to fractals. Without too much math the ideas behind fractals are explained. The application of these ideas to very different scientific fields is explained, which brings the topic to life. Examples are taken from viruses and the Grand Canyon, from patterns of trees or the veins in a hand to water twisting out of a running tap.
