Features and Benefits

Looking for the Best Birdwatching Binoculars can be difficult due to the many styles and options available today. I have listed below some of the most important features to look for when shopping for birding binoculars.

  • Magnification- Getting close is the main reason for getting binoculars in the first place, so this is the place to start. The more magnification, the harder it is to hold steady. Most birders use 8x, however consider the 10x for all around binos, and think about stabilization binoculars. They are the newest in technology, and they offer a steady beautiful view.

  • Field of View is important in birdwatching binoculars. It basically means the width of the scene you are viewing when you look through the binoculars. A wide field of view makes it easier to find birds. Consider this- the lower magnifications means wider field of view. Higher magnification results in a loss of detail.Too wide a field of view and you get distortion on the edges of the image.

  • Waterproof/Fogproof. if you go birdwatching in all weather conditions, it is a good idea to choose waterproof/fogproof binoculars. Most quality binoculars are water resistant and fogproof and can handle wet conditions.Fogging of the lenses occur in temperature extremes, or during high humidity and again most quality lenses have coatings to prevent fogging of the lenses.

  • Eye Relief. This is most important if you use glasses. You want eye cups on the binoculars so that you can keep your glasses on during viewing.

  • Do you want Binoculars for "all around" use and use for Birdwatching? Then you should consider 10x magnification binoculars

Where to find Birds

Birdwatching in New York is very popular due in part to an unusually rich and abundant bird life. In New York there are over 450 kinds of birds recorded through out the years. Why is there an abundance of birds in New York is due to its open space. With over 49,000 square miles, it is the thirtieth largest state, but despite its large size, a little over 18 million people live here, and half of them live in and around New York city! That averages to about 370 people per square mile! So there is a lot of open space for bird habitat.
In Western New York where I live, borders on two of the Great Lakes- Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. These large freshwater lakes are home to many species of birds such as Herring and Ring billed Gulls. The Great Lakes Plains, or the Ontario Plains is a flat agricultural region, which supports many species such as horned Larks, migrating Warblers, nuthatches, Redpols, and Evening Grosbeaks.

Along the shores of Lake Erie you will find http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tifft-Nature-Preserve/43714458715 just south of Downtown Buffalo. On any given day in the spring, you will find so many species of Warblers, and other birds, it is just a fantastic place to birdwatch. I have seen people hand feed chickadees while walking along the paths.

Another great area to visit for birdwatching is: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Iroquois-National-Wildlife-Refuge/168915473153818The Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge has over 200 species of birds, one of which is the Bald Eagle, which you view in there nest during spring.

Spring migration is right around the corner! Get out there with your favorite binoculars to view the best nature has to offer! Happy birdwatching to you and hope you spot that special bird you have been looking for!
