Best Ever Book- to-Movie Adaptations

How many times did you read a book and saw its adaptation to a movie and were totally disappointed? Usually, good adaptations from book to a movie are hard to come by. There are a lot of factors to consider when making an adaptation from a novel, and these things are almost always "commercial"concerns. Sometimes when writing a screenplay, some parts of the novel are left out or even worse, they are changed, only to be able to appeal to a broader audience to guarantee a blockbuster turnout. Or sometimes the director prefers a highly popular actor who actually doesn't really fit the character, again for the same commercial concerns. I always have reservations before I see the film version of a book because of these facts. Only rarely have I enjoyed and left the theater satisfied, thinking the director really did justice to the book and its author. I have researched a lot of websites on this topic and found so many different film choices, but 20 of them really stood out because they were included in almost all the lists floating on the internet. I gathered them here for you, they are in no particular order.

Stanley Kubrick - A Clockwork Orange

It's a strange book and a stranger movie but definitely a classic and they did a great job with making the movie at least as good as the book.

FIGHT CLUB

Fight Club is Chuck Palahniuk's first novel, and it's a strange one. I read the book when I first heard it was going to be a movie, and by the end of it I thought "How in the heck are they going to make this a movie?" I didn't think a movie could do the book justice, but I was sure wrong. Fight Club is an awesome movie, which is why it was pretty much an instant cult classic. The book and the movie are different really, but still equally great in their own right.

HARRY POTTER

Harry Potter Movies are The Best

I have read all of the Harry Potter books at least twice. In cases where I love a book enough to read it more than once, it is rare that I'm not deeply disappointed by the movie version. In the case of the Harry Potter movies, I honestly loved the movies just as much as the books. Yes, there are things that are left out and minor things that are changed in the adaptation, but overall the movies are enjoyable in and of themselves, even if you haven't read the books.

The Book or The Movie

Which do you prefer?

When you hear a book you've read is going to be a movie, do you go see it? Or if you see a movie that looks interesting and find out it's adapted from a book, do you try to read the book before you go see the movie, or do you prefer to wait til after you've seen it to read the book?

What do you prefer? Would you read the book first or see its movie adaptation?

Loading

I would see the movie first.

CalamariFritti says:

I've read a lot of books after seeing the movie (Harry Potter 1, Trainspotting, Fight Club, etc) and find it adds to my enjoyment of the story since there is more room to expand details and characters rather than condense them into a movie length story. Usually disappointed when I read the book first then see the movie.

Shadrosky says:

Usually I'll watch a great movie, then track down the book it was based on. I'm very picky about what I read due to the time it takes to finish one, so I'd much rather watch a 2 hr. film

szeman says:

I did read your list and I should mention that lists like this are all subjective. However, I didn't read the Bone Collector, but I saw the movie and it was predictable. So I wouldn't include that on any list.

However, there are films on your list that I would include if I were to do the same one. But I would also include Interview With A Vampire too. As for your question. That depends. In the case of Interview With A Vampire, I read the book first before the movie. It will be the same when the movie version of The Hobbit comes out.

Ramkitten says:

I generally like to see the movie first. I've found that I then learn more about the characters and other details in the book than the movie is able to show, given the limitations on time. It hasn't always worked out that I saw a film before reading the book, because there might not BE a movie yet, but I've always preferred it that way when there's both.

DrinkWorkshop says:

If I read the book first, the movie often won't live up to my expectations. If I see the movie first, though, I usually like them both.

I would definitely read the book first.

Mary Saunders says:

I'd see the film first. Reading a book to then be disappointed by a film interpretation would be irritating. A good screenplay with the characters well portrayed gives depth to the experience of reading the book. I've not known this to happen the other way around.....

cocktailsexaminer says:

I usually try to read the book first, although there are some instances where a movie has led me to read an excellent book.

nightcats says:

I don't always manage it, but my preference is to read the book first. I usually find the book much more thorough than the movie. More than once I have not been able to follow the plot of a movie and had to read the book to understand what was happening.

dellgirl says:

I would definitely like to read the book first. Movies have a way of distorting the events of the story, in my opinion. Occasionally though, a movie does the book justice. I like when that happens.

CHalloran says:

I definitely read the book first.

Great lens! These are great movies coming from books. Portraying their role from a given character in the book with excellence. These are the best book to movie adaptations. Sundae ;-)

Hands down the Godfather is one of the best book to movie adaptations of all time :)
  • Ramkitten Apr 10, 2011 @ 5:43 pm | delete
I do like watching movie adaptations and have seen some great ones. I haven't seen many that are on your list (but Fight Club I have, and that was a great example), but a couple of others that come to mind are "Hunt For Red October" (I like submarine movies) and "Thin Red Line." What I tend NOT to like, though, are books written after-the-fact, with the film coming first. One of those that I remember is "The Piano."
  • CHalloran Apr 10, 2011 @ 5:49 pm | delete
I had no idea The Piano was written after the movie. I liked that movie a lot.
