General Fiction
Jeffrey Archer
This is a particular favourite of mine. I love a story in which a character starts off with nothing, and then goes on to become rich and famous. I particularly enjoy the Jeffrey Archer books for this. Many of his stories, Sons Of Fortune, Kane & Abel, First Among Equals. Revolve around the growth of the protagonists, how they are raised in their respective families and how their lives are influenced by the world around them. You can recount historical events that work around the storylines, and enjoy the growth of the character. You almost feel as though you're growing up with them. Personally, I nearly threw one of the books across the room because of a character that betrayed another's trust. I was so into it, and I know many others that are guilty of this too.
Jeffrey Archer books are available in almost every airport, they're international best-sellers and well worth picking up. Kane & Abel was the first story that made me want to go into business. Sons of Fortune showed me the possibilities of being an Author. First Among Equals is the reason I've become involved in Politics.
Three books, one Author, and my life has changed. Worth every penny.
Archer Books
My Personal Picks
These are the books I managed to get lost in the most, feel free to browse through his catalogue if any others tickle your fancy.
General Fiction
John Grisham
I quite enjoy reading books by John Grisham, he's a good author but at the same time a frustrating one. His books are very well written, they all follow the same line that make it a consistent and enjoyable read. Why do I find it frustrating? I'm not going to lie, he leaves open ends to his stories.I'm not so soft as to say that I require a happily ever after, but he does have a tendency to finish some of his books with a, "What happens next?" and you'll kill yourself wondering what happened. Some readers find that to be the most rewarding because they get to fill in the blanks and end the story to their liking.
I however, read what's on the pages and find it frustrating. John Grisham however isn't as predictable as I make him out to be, he'll only do that in certain books, whilst in others he'll give you the happy ever after that you were looking for. The stories tend to lean towards political intrigue, crime drama as well as mystery. They're fantastic page turners that can be read in solid sitting, or over a period of a few days. You will find yourself staying awake for most of the night, I'm not going to lie.
I'm going to give a select pick of which ones I think you guys might enjoy.
Grisham Books
My Personal Picks
These are the ones that I found to be the most engrossing, the storylines were fantastic and the imagery vivid. There might be a few plot twists hidden around too, so feel free to have a look.
Fantasy
Raymond E. Feist
This particular author has managed to entertain me through school, college, university and any time I'm lucky enough to pick up one of his books at a shop. Think of your favourite book... have you ever wondered where those characters are now? Compared those favourite characters you grew up with to the new characters in a different story by the author?Feist doesn't have that problem. He first started with a book called 'Magician', and when I read this, I loved the characters, and was delighted to see it turn into a trilogy. When he released a saga a few years later, I was happy to see new stuff by him, but was slightly sad that it wasn't going to be about my favourites.
I was wrong.
My favourite characters, they were in the story and they were older. They had children who had their personalities... imagine that concept, and multiply it, because Feist takes everything you love about his original stories and evolves them into amazing works of literature. You'll be lost in his web of storytelling and I can safely say, if you see his books in a shop, make sure it's the first in a saga. You can jump in for any of them and still appreciate what's going on, that's the beauty of his writing style.
Feist Books
My Personal Picks
Here are some of the best books to start you off, I'll put in the first book, 'Magician' because it's a personal favourite, but feel free to jump into any saga that you think looks interesting. I'm really tempted to just throw up a poll to find out what your favourite characters are, there's such a diverse group of personalities and abilities, there's something for everyone in these books.
The descriptions that you get from Amazon, they mention trolls, ogres and dark elves. Many a seasoned fantasy reader would laugh at this and maybe interpret them as childish stories. I'm stating it here, that it's not the case. When you read through the first chapter of any of these stories, you'll notice that you're being drawn into a very well crafted web. It's not going to let you go...

History
Conn Iggulden
Now, this is one of my good favourites. I remember picking up a book titled, 'Wolf of the Plains', and I was really enjoying it. A story of a young boy in ancient history, getting cast out by his tribe and living as an outcast. The story of how he rose to power and united the outcasts was inspiring, how he formed a new tribe and became a giant power across all the lands. Imagine my delight when I realised I had just read the entire history of Genghis Khan!Conn Iggulden is a writer that takes your imagination and runs with it. He manages to inform you about history, and you don't even feel like you're learning. When he's telling you about a vigilant soldier that's trying to take care of everyone around him during a war, you've no idea that the soldier scaling the giant wall of a fortress is none other than Julius Ceaser.
It's worth picking up these books, not just for the learning content, but for the storyline. I'd highly reccommend them.
Iggulden Picks
Have a look!
Wolf of the Plains is my favourite, but I'd suggest you take a look at all of them, you never know which historical figure you'll be learning about.

- Didn't list my area...research "type" books. I am so glad you have chosen to read so much. Time well spent I hope. In my teaching field I have read mostly fiction for student purposes, but now I don't have that kind of luxury and only give my attention to non-fiction works. But I'm ok with that. I still get to read what I love.

- Nice lens! Sad to say... I mostly read school books. :( With two jobs and full time school, I really don't have time for anything else, but these look interesting! Maybe, when I finally get done with my degree, I will look into them!

- Thank you for the kind words, I will be sure to take the votes into consideration. I've a good one for History. I probably should have specified which Nation the History would cover... maybe you guys might want to know about Irish History. It's what I read most. I'll figure something out. Thanks again.

- I used to be a big Grisham fan, but felt he got into a bit of a rut with the same type of book after a while. For fiction would recommend Ken Follet as someone to also look into.

- I'm a Grisham fan, too, but I know what you mean about the endings. I read one of his books -- hm, can't recall which at the moment -- on a long train ride once, and it kept me thoroughly happy when there wasn't much to look at out the window. You've got a nice selection going here.

- I know! The ending generally kills it for me too, but then again... they can be worth a read. There is one of the books I really want to find, it was a guy that bought a newspaper but it turned into a whole crime story, was quite good, just can't remember it. Thanks again for the kind words, I'm going to really push on this particular lens, probably because it's my favourite thing to talk about.
