The Best Horse Books For Women Who Love Horses
Just one of them Horse Crazy Girls I guess
I've always been fascinated with my seemingly illogical love affair with horses. I swear I was born with a passion for them. I'm pretty sure if a scientist were to look at my DNA they would see it written in my genetic code. A love that goes far too deep to explain. We've all heard about those horse crazy girls because of how common a thing it is for young girls to love horses. Some of them grow out of it. And some of us ... do not.
So whether you're looking for a good book fro yourself or a gift for that special someone who loves horses, this is the place. Many of these books shown on this page I've read myself and keep in my personal library.

Riding Between the Worlds: Expanding Our Potential Through the Way of the Horse

Riding Between the Worlds is the follow-up to Linda Kohanov's first book The Tao of Equus delves more deeply into the innate subtle knowledge that exists within all horses. It further explores the connections between horses and people and how they affect our mutual existences. The author and equine pioneer explains what she call black horse wisdom, "wisdom shrouded in mystery, wisdom that's felt more deeply than can ever be explained."
In this book Linda Kohanov demonstartes a new brand of therapy where the people are the patients and the horse are the therapists.
This book is a powerful exploration of the spiritual, emotional and psychological lessons that horses embody. It's told through the authors personal experiences as well as anecdotes and stories from other horse women.

Horses and the Mystical Path: The Celtic Way of Expanding the Human Soul

Horses and the Mystical Path was written by the pyschotherapist family team of Adele, Marlena and Thomas McCormick. They pioneered the use of horses to help severely emotionally disturbed young people and adults with the Three Eagle Equine Experience program.
They had come to a cross roads in their work about the conflicting teachings of religion and psychology. In order to move forward they combined the two approaches into a new psycho-spiritual approach. This lead onto a wisdom pilgrimage where the visited and studied with many peoples in Scotland,Spain and Morocco.
In this book the McCormick's explore the Celtic people's longstanding integration of animals and their natural world with mysticism and personal development. It's an interesting exploration where our mystical heritage with the horse meets new age psychotherapy.

Dark Horses and Black Beauties: Animals, Women, a Passion

In an effort to understand her horse obsessed childhood, the author interviews an equine welfare specialist who claims that horse loving women tend to fall into three categories.
* Those who want something out of them, personally or professionally.
* Those who anthropomorphize them
* And those who are seeking a higher knowledge about horses and humans and the mysteries of their intersection.
From here the author delves into the horse as myth, the history of the horses and the cruelties of man. This is not a tightly written package of information. It truly feels like the reader is following along on the authors quest to makes sense of what horses have meant in her life, both spiritually and emotionally.
Note: I think the book offers many important facts and information, but there is also quite a bit about man's cruelty to horses past and present. This isn't the "feel good" read of so many books which explore the topic of horses and women. But none-the-less it is an important work and one that caused me to stop and think about the way I view horses in the world.

II have seen horses transform humans and humans transform horses. I have myself been moved and altered in these transactions. It is one of the reasons I ride and spend time around horses. ....
Horses give us a chance to seek transformation by giving us a partner so challenging and engrossing that it is difficult to be involved with the horse and not be touched in significant ways.

Mares (you gotta love them) by Betsy Kelleher
Books That Explore The Kinship Between Women And Horses
Personally I love short story books because you get dozens of ideas and experiences on the same subject. I've never owned a mare myself but I would feel more confident going into mare ownership, particularly if I ran into problems after reading this book. This is not ahow to trainign maanual, it is simply the experiences both good and bad that people have had with the mares that touched their lives.
MARES! (ya gotta love em)...Fifty Stories to Aid & Inspire Mare Owners by Betsy Kelleher. Published by Xulon Press in 2008. 452 pages, soft cover.
This book is about mares, but it's about women, too. It's about the essence of being female. Dealing with a mare can be frustrating. This book
contains 50 stories by mare owners across the country, to help and inspire and share the wonderful qualities of mares who have touched their owners hearts.
Learn about Territorial Mares from Julie Goodnight, and read about Gender Training from Dr. Ron Meredith. Glimpse treasured moments between horse and human as they learn together and from each other, sharing the struggle and joy of building trust, respect, good communication and mutual dependence.
About Betsy Kelleher

Where the Blind Horse Sings: Love and Healing at an Animal Sanctuary

Kathy Stevens was a teacher for 11 years when she decided to buy a junky rundown farm which she turned into the Catskills Animal Sanctuary and loving place which has saved over a thousand abused livestock. The author states. "our job was to love and nurture them without expectation,"
This is a wonderful book which explores the emotional and intellectual side of not only horses but other farm animals in a way which which will make you rethink about how you perceive most livestock.
Personally I think it's easier for most of us to not think about the animals which sustain us. Thinking cattle and pigs have the same complex emotions as out cherished house pets tends to complicate my view of the world. And yet having raised many kinds of farm animals I know this to be true.

Chosen by a Horse

As an equestrian artist I am often in deep conversations with people who have horse stories to share. This indeed is one of my favorite parts of being an animal artist. The sharing of stories and experiences with people of a like mind.
One of the reoccurring themes that I so often we the horse person says "You know I thought I was saving the horse. But in the end the horse saved me."
This is exactly what this book is about. The author Susan Richards adopted a half starved, abused and abandoned former racehorse. And the experience changed her life forever.

Chosen Forever

Editorial Review From Booklist
Richards reflects on how rich life becomes when one travels her own best path. Orphaned early in life, Richards struggled to connect with the world until a horse named Lay Me Down taught her how to trust another creature and to love deeply. These hard-learned lessons became her emotional bedrock. As she chronicles her travels across the country to promote her very successful Chosen by a Horse (2006), she is stoically honest about her battles with anxiety and alcoholism. Book tours are far from glamorous, and Richards allows her readers a rare glimpse into what goes through the mind of a nervous author as she wipes sweaty palms on her black trousers on the way to the podium to read. But she does meet her future husband, Dennis Stock, along the way. A talented photojournalist, he gently and determinedly woos her, believing that fate brought them together. Richards writes more courageously than she perhaps realizes, and each page of this uplifting book will touch a chord in everyone who enjoyed her first book

Hope Rising: Stories from the Ranch of Rescued Dreams

The book Hope Rising is a detailed account of the Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch in Oregon, which is a rescue for abused and neglected horses and disadvantaged children are allowed to care for them. Somehow the coming together of these two pained creatures helps heal both horse and human.
This is a dramatic book written with vivid details in describing the conditions of some horses and some children. But the joy comes in the triumph of both as they offer hope and healing.
The book is full of short stories offering glimpses of these kinds of miracles. You need not be a horse lover to enjoy this book.
It's an emotional book and a read of the very best kind.

Another outstanding collection of horse stories written by horsewomen in various fields of the horse industry. Once again there are artists and writers who share their personal and often inspirational stories of the meaning of horses to themselves as well as the powerful emotional connection they share with the animal.
And as is GaWaNi Pony Boy's style for creating books, this one is heavily illustrated with artwork and poetry celebrating the horse in all it's many forms.

Celebrating The Horse Through Photography
Horses by Yann Arthus-Bertrand.
Horse Books Celebrating The Horse Through Photography
I found this book Horses by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. rather interesting. It's not the traditional way of photographing horses and his photographs have kind of an other-worldly or old time feel to them. He has traveled the globe photography horses often held in hand by the people who own them.
The photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand has a way that photographing horse portrait that is a style unique unto himself. Many of his photos have the traditional portrait canvas hung behind the horse but then the photographer has backed away from this to show all the goings-on behind the set as well. It's almost like a magicians reveal. So you have a photo of a farmer holding his prize draft stallion against a traditional portrait canvas and then you see the rugged farming terrain in the background. This manner of capturing the horse tells so much more about the animal, the land and the people he comes from.

Horse, a Portrait: A Photographer's Life With Horses

Award winning photographer Christiane Slawik shares her experience photographing horses with stories of the events and horses, while she was taking each photo. Her work combines the energy, strength and dynamics of these powerful animals with a sensitivity, gentleness and tranquility that comes from the author's own exploration of what horses mean to her, while trying to grasp her deep seated interest for these amazing animals.
A visually stunning book that takes you along on the ride of a equestrian photographers experiences. Another great addition to any horse lovers library.
Equus by Tim Flach
Horse Books Celebrating The Horse Through Photography
So as your flipping through the pages of his book you'll find rare glimpses of Icelandic Horses galloping along a beach filled with chunks of ice and a glacier in the background. Or perhaps a snow white Arabian charging across the desert dunes. From their his work suddenly changes to zooming in to one aspect of the horse so closely that at first glance you lose the identity of the horse. You see the soft sloping or curve of the neck or rump. Or perhaps merely a whiskery muzzle. This book in all way celebrates the horse.

Spirit Horses by Tony Stromberg
Horse Books Celebrating The Horse Through Photography
Spirit Horses is a photographic essay of the essence of the horse by equine photographer Tony Stromberg. His photos are infused with movement, light and atmosphere. They are show with a sensitivity of amn who has come to understand the horse human connection. He sees his interactions with horses as opportunities for learning.
The book is a good sized coffee-table book filled with color, black & white and sepia tone photos as well as quotes. I like that many of the horses are natural horses and not show-ring models of perfection. It is with these horses he captures the beauty and eloquence of that which is equine.

Connecting with Horses: The Life Lessons We Can Learn From Horses

Anyone who has spent any time around animals understands that there is a lot going on with them emotionally and spiritually.
This book, Connecting with Horses: The Life Lessons We Can Learn From Horses explores that idea and how the horse-human connection can lead to better lives for both ourselves and our horses. It is a sort of road map for achieving a deeper bond with your horse.
The book helps to illustrate this point with many stories about horses helping to not only heal but also stabilize the lives of the people who are involved with them.
The author explains that the horse is not only a partner, but a therapist and potential soul mate as well.

Between whom there is a hearty truth, there is love.
