What follows here are real reviews of dog training books that I actually own, the books that I read over again and refer to often. Most of these are the same books on dog training, dog behaviours, and - yes - even dog psychology that I often recommend to students at the dog obedience school where I teach part-time.
I do think it's important to try to highlight what I feel are the very best books, because there are a number of somewhat questionable dog training books on the market, these days! (And you don't want to get me started on some of the e-books for sale online!) As well, some older books available that, though once highly regarded, are now outdated and no longer recommended, in the light of on-going scientific research into dog psychology, the changing attitudes towards the relationship between dogs and their owners, and the evolving role of companion dogs in our busy family households.
For the new dog owner or student dog trainer, it can be hard to know where to start. Hopefully, this page will be a help!

Best Book on Puppy Training
Perfect Puppy in 7 Days by Dr. Sophia Yin
Perfect Puppy in 7 Days: How to Start Your Puppy Off Right
Amazon Price: $13.97 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
In this 175-page book, using her father's dog Lucy as a "case study" and with almost 400 photos, Dr. Yin explains why puppies behave the way they do, how their personality is formed by both environment and training, and how quickly even a young puppy can be trained using positive-reinforcement methods.
Veterinarian Dr. Sophia Yin, the author of Perfect Puppy in 7 Days, is a respected animal behaviorist (Masters in Animal Science from UC Davis), an award-winning pet columnist, a popular workshop leader, and a behavior expert for television shows such as Animal Planet's Dogs 101. She is also on the executive board for the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) Handling Guidelines Committee, and the American Humane Association (AHA) Animal Behavior and Training Advisory Committee. In short, Dr. Sophia Yin not only knows her stuff when it comes to starting a puppy off right. Equally importantly, when it comes to writing a dog training book, Dr. Yin also knows how to communicate her expertise to her readers.

Dog Training for Dummies - A Good Basic Book for Dog Owners
Dog Training For Dummies
Is Your Dog a Canine Good Citizen?

Jack and Wendy Volhard - authors of Dog Training for Dummies are also the authors of The Canine Good Citizen: Every Dog Can Be One.
Simply put, The Canine Good Citizen: Every Dog Can Be One is an essential guide for any dog owner who'd like to prepare their pet to take the American Kennel Club's certification test for its Canine Good Citizen program.
For those who are interested in going on to pet therapy programs with their dogs, the CGC or CGN test is a recommended "next step" after your basic obedience course.
(Here in Canada, the CKC's Canine Good Neighbour program is comparable.)

Leash pops, harsh corrections, even the use of choke chains - it was Standard Operating Procedure back in the day. We were all about "being the alpha" and making the dog "obey commands" or else! Back then, that was the only way we knew to train dogs. And it worked. Sort of.
These days, fortunately, we have better methods. Positive Dog Training is very effective - and much more fun!
The Best Introduction to Clicker Training
Getting Started: Clicker Training for Dogs
Amazon Price: $11.53 (as of 02/23/2012)![]()
Karen Pryor is a behavioral biologist with an international reputation in two fields, marine mammal biology and behavioral phsychology. You'd think that might make her writing style a bit dry and academic - but not so! Her enthusiasm for her subject, and the wealth of experience she has to drawn on for real-life examples of the concepts she's explaining, makes for a lively read and a great learning experience.
As the name, Getting Started: Clicker Training for Dogs is a good solid introduction to the basics of clicker training. Unlike some of the other introductory clicker training books on the market, however, it is not so simple that you'd be done with it in a few days. You'll find yourself referring back to this book every so often, as you learn to perfect your clicker training skills.
Getting Started: Clicker Training for Dogs is not yet available for Kindle.

The Best Dog Training Book for Dealing with Separation Anxiety
I'll be Home Soon: How to Prevent and Treat Separation Anxiety.
Amazon Price: $3.72 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
Don't be fooled by the small size of this book - it is more of a booklet, at just 38 pages, but the contents offer a full and detailed program for tackling SA. Now all you need to do is faithfully follow her instructions...
Granted, that's hard to do. Separation Anxiety treatment calls for a dedicated effort on the part of the dog owner and the whole family, and there is no shortcut to a solution. That said, it really is worth tackling SA - or better yet, being aware enough of the potential for SA to develop that you can act early on to nip it in the bud with 'alone training." It'll make for a happier dog, a happier you, and a heck of a lot less stress in your home! Dr. McConnell's little booklet is the very best there is (so far) for explaining exactly how to go about it.
The Best Book to Help You Understand How Dogs Think
How Dogs Think: What the World Looks Like to Them and Why They Act the Way They Do
Amazon Price: $4.10 (as of 02/22/2012)![]()
A few years ago, Dr. Stanley Coren's books were all the rage and you couldn't turn on the radio or TV without hearing or seeing him in an interview. That seems to have toned down a fair amount, as new personalities take the spotlight and new dog-oriented shows are launched and new celebrity trainers get the PR push... and some of Dr. Coren's early ideas about dog psychology have been overturned by newer research work.
But I have yet to find a better book for making you think about how your dog thinks - and how dog brains work differently to process the world than ours do. And that's important stuff to keep front of mind, that our dogs are NOT just little kids in furry PJs!

The Best Book on Dog Training for Owners of "Stubborn" Dogs and Hard-to-Train Breeds
As someone with an addiction to retired racing greyhounds, I'm repeatedly finding myself in a position of trying to teach these independent yet passive dogs to work actively and joyfully as a team with their human handler. Even more challenging, they are "crossover" dogs - they've been trained for a racing career already, and now my job is to teach them how to be pet dogs instead of professional athletes. First task, every time, is to convince them that hanging out with their owners is fun, and it's okay to do something besides stand like a statue or run like the wind!
When Pigs Fly!: Training Success with Impossible Dogs
Amazon Price: $11.50 (as of 02/23/2012)![]()
Different breeds of dogs have different strengths and aptitudes - and different challenges - that come into play when we start training. That's where this book comes in.
It's an entertaining read, and it gives a lot of insight into how different breeds of dogs tend to act and react in various situations, how their genetic make-up determines the best approach to take in training; and it lays out a practical training program - step by step - that i have found really does work wonders with an "unbiddable" dog.

- So nice to hear that there are kind ways to train dogs. Choke collars always seemed a bit mean.

- Would love to know if you have any information on house-training miniature Daschunds! My sister has three, and they're really tricky to train. Excellent resource on dog training books! Blessed by a Squid Angel. :)

- They're tricky to train because they're (a) hounds and (b) a long way down on the ground, away from your face. With very small dogs, I sometimes start to train a new behavior by getting down on my knees or sitting on a small footstool to work with them, then gradually move to a standing position as they start to get more fluent with the behavior - maybe your sister can give that a try, and see if it helps? Thanks so much for your blessing!
