BRAIN FITNESS TRAINING SHOWN TO IMPROVE WORKING MEMORY
Training Your Working Memory Boosts Brain Fitness And Protects Against Age-Related Cognitive Declines
Hundreds of millions of people all over the world are now looking for ways to incorporate brain fitness training techniques, systems, and software games in order to improve mental concentration, build better mental focus, and protect themselves against natural (but not necessarily inevitable) slowing of mental functions brought on by weakening of brain cell strength and pliability as we get older.
Recent scientific research studies support and encourage the trend with findings that minor adjustments to our physical and mental behavior can make a significant difference in whether we maintain our cognitive health or wind up falling behind and having to suffer the negative repercussions of decreasing brainpower.
One of the most convenient tools available for our benefit is that of our working memory - a brain function that used to be referred to as "short term memory" but which is now viewed as a more practical, real-time utility that determines everything from how well we concentrate and focus to how we deal with stress. Working memory is the amount of information we can hold in mind to deal with at any one time, imagery, numbers, details, and other relevant information. As an example, if someone were to show you flashcards of a series of numbers, you can only hold so much of that information in working memory in order to recall it before some of it starts to fade away in order to make room for more information.
A University of Missouri-Columbia and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2008 says that we can hold somewhere between one and five things in mind at once, give or take a couple, depending on the individual. Any more than that and what we're really doing is stacking up the information in a process called "chunking". Most researchers contend that the number of slots available in our working memory is fixed for each of us.
Working memory is even a major factor that determines how successful we can become, because the less capacity and skill we demonstrate in using working memory the less likely we are to effectively plan for the future, deal with important details, organize our lives, and rise to the expectations necessary for career and business excellence.
Fortunately, the brain is designed for working memory to be trained so that information can be held with more clarity and for a much longer period of time, resulting in improved mental concentration, better mental focus, greater mental endurance, and cognitive flexibility.
The Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry featured a 2005 report about a study of children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). According to the journal, the parents whose kids received working memory training treatment for their ADHD said their children showed paid better attention and were less hyperactive; whereas the parents of the ADHD kids receiving no working memory training reported no such changes.
Other studies show that working memory training increases not only control of attention - allowing us to be more efficient, organized, and productive - but that it helps build the necessary physiological reservoir we need as we get older to slow down natural weakening of brain cells, possibly putting off debilitating shortfalls by several years, or eliminating them altogether.
By adopting a brain fitness lifestyle that includes a consistent, reasonable amount of 'flexing' our working memory, we can increase our cognitive skill, strength, and endurance to handle today's busy, demanding pace with relaxing ease.
