Consider the following:

  • What size bread loaves do you want to make?

  • Do you need a timer delay function?

  • Will you need a dough program to make dinner rolls, bread sticks etc?

  • Would a bake only feature be useful to you enabling you to bake your own favorite cakes recipes?

  • Does making fresh fruit jam or meat loaf in your bread machine appeal to you?

  • Is making Low Carb or Gluten-Free bread important to you?

Once you have bought a bread machine you'll have fun making your own delicious loaves and it won't be long until you are trying out other recipes. You will be tempted to make a variety of rolls, bread sticks, pizza dough, cakes and even jam!

Oatmeal Bread

Ingredients:

1 cup water, boiling
2 tablespoons butter
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
3 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon dark molasses
1/2 cup oats, old-fashioned
1 large egg, lightly beaten
3 cups bread flour
2 teaspoons yeast, sprinkled over flour

Preparation:
Put oats in a mixing bowl; pour boiling water over the oats. When oats have cooled but are still a bit warm, add remaining ingredients according to bread machine manufacturer's manual. Bake on light setting. Makes a 1 1/2-pound loaf.

Tomato-Basil Bread

Makes a 1 1/2 loaf in the bread machine, or two 8-inch loaves shaped and baked conventionally.
Ingredients:

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
3 cups bread flour
3 tablespoons wheat bran
1/3 cup quinoa grain or cracked wheat (bulgur)
3 tablespoons dry milk powder
1 tablespoon dried leaf basil
1/3 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups water

Preparation:
Pour boiling water over sun-dried tomato halves. Soak 10 minutes, drain, then cool to room temperature. With scissors, snip into 1/4-inch pieces. Do not use tomatoes that are packed in oil for this recipe.

Add all the ingredients in the order suggested by your bread machine brochure and process on the basic bread cycle according to the manufacturers directions. To bake in the oven, knead by hand or machine, let rise in lightly buttered bowl for about an hour, punch down, shape, let rise in 2 loaf pans (lightly sprayed with vegetable spray or buttered), then bake in a 350° oven for approximately 25 to 30 minutes, until loaves are browned and sound hollow when tapped on bottom.

Spiced Date Bread

This is a yeast bread, for the bread machine, made with chopped dates and cinnamon.
Ingredients:

1 1/4 cups water
2 tablespoons butter
4 cups bread flour
1/4 cup packed or granulated brown sugar (light or dark)
2 tablespoons wheat germ, optional
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspon salt
2 teaspoons yeast
1/2 cup finely chopped dates, soaked in hot water then drained

Preparation:
Add ingredients (except dates) according to your manufacturer's suggested order; set on light crust; add drained dates at the beep.
