Introducting St Lucia

The coastline of St. Lucia is nothing short of spectacular with its hidden bays and uncrowded sandy beaches. The 2 sugarloaf-shaped cones, known as the Pitons, form the island's highest mountains and its best known landmarks.

The capital and main port, Castries, is attractively located in a protected area against a backcurtain of mountains. The military importance of its excellent natural harbour was identified from the earliest times of Western settlement. For many decades Britain and France fought for control of St Lucia. At the end of the nineteenth century, Castries was an major hub for Caribbean trade.

Numerous tremors, tropical hurricanes and devastating fires have obliterated any vestiges of Castries' colonial past, leaving a modern town. There are only a few 19th- and early 20th century French style traditional buildings that have been spared from being destroyed.

St Lucia also lays claim to the planet's only driveable volcano, plus pungent sulphur springs, and well-known Diamond Falls where the mineral-laden waters are renowned for their beneficial effects and bathers can enjoy in ponds of varying heat.

Without a doubt, the island's gorgeous scenery, gorgeous beaches and lush vegetation make St Lucia a favorite Carribean port of call.

Dining
For food-lovers 2 establishments stand out in Castries. The Coal Pot, which features New World cooking, a match of Creole seafood with exquisite French cooking. Alternatively try Froggie Jacques Tropical Bistro for another type of fusion cooking. Both these two establishments are located in Ganters, near the dock.

Derek Walcott Square
The square is named after the St. Lucian-born Nobel Prize Winner for Literature, best known for his superb poetry. For a quote-

Those five or six young guys
lunched on the stoop
that oven-hot summer night
whistled me over. Nice
and friendly. So, I stop.
MacDougal or Christopher
Street in chains of light.
(Blues)

The main building on the square is the 19th century Cathedral. Its sombre shape belies a stylish inside famous for the colorful stained-glass windows. The town still contains some ancient Creole wooden houses, but it is most famous for its stunning natural surroundings. Wonder at the famous twin Pitons,a drive-in volcano, visit its sulphur pools.
