LCD Technical Terms - Buying Guide
Screen SizeIn general the larger the screen the higher the price.
Screen Sizes come in 26, 32, 37, 40, 42, 46, 50 etc... the number increases all the time. What this number actually means though is the diagonal measurement from the top corner to the bottom of the screen. If you want a cinema like experience you want this number to be large. The table to the right shows recommended screen size according to the size of your room.
HD compatibility
Full HD is 1080 lines per frame, but entry level LCD TVs start at 720 lines per frame. This is still much better than old style televisions that had little more than 500 lines per frame. In practical terms less lines per frame means less detail in HD.
Image Frequency
Image frequency is the number of images displayed per second. Entry level TVs are 50HZ whereas higher specification models are 100HZ meaning that double the number of images are displayed per second. This means that movements on the tv appear more fluid and the image is smoother. It also means that the images appear sharper and more natural to the human eye.
