Chessmaster

Chessmaster: Grandmaster Edition

Chessmaster is a computer game owned by UbiSoft and is available on the PC, Xbox, and DS.It has sold more than 5 million units as of 2002. It is certainly one of the oldest programs dating back to 1986. If you are a young adult or older who is a inexperienced, completely new, or an intermediate player this software is suitable for you.

The first section of Chessmaster is known as Learning Chess. It contains tutorials from both Grandmaster Larry Christansen on his section "Attacking Chess" and International Chess Master Josh Waitzkin about his book the Art of Learning, both which are very useful to beginning and intermediate players. It also contains 900 famous games analyzed as well as a database of over 600,000 games. Chessmaster's last part of the Learning Chess is the explanation of book openings and modern variation. It also lets you create your own opening books which helped me immensely in learning a standard way of opening a chess game against both white and black.

The second section of Chessmaster is the single player. There are over 150 computer personalities you can play against whose strength ranges from a starting playing to an International Grandmaster. Chessmaster has also assembled personalities from chess legends such as Grandmasters: Alexander Alekhine, Bobby Fischer, and Mikhail Botvinnik, as well as many more. These personalities are identical to the grandmaster's playing style and well as his choice of openings so that the it makes you feel like you are plating the chess legend himself. There is also a training mode where you can analyze and try to improve your chess game and a tournament mode where you compete in a tournament with preset rules determined by the player.

The last section is the the multiplayer section. Here you can play rated and unrated games, tournaments, ladders, simultaneous exhibitions, and watch other matches.

There are many puzzles, as well as over 50 different boards and chess sets in both in 2 and 3-D.

Chessmaster 10th Edition holds an 84% rating on review aggregator site Game Rankings.
IGN gave Chessmaster 10th Edition a score of 8.4/10
