The whole business of Santa and Rudolf - lovely as it is - has assumed the status of religion in this secular world. This was the reason I chose to do a separate page for children's Christmas carols. Christmas can be bewildering for children, especially those not brought up as Christians. Out there is a whole beautiful world of song which does not depend on Mummy kissing Santa,or toothbrushes snuggling up to each other. Rudolf is more Disney than Divine and much as I dearly love Jingle Bells it was actually written for Thanksgiving, not Christmas. So here we go with a whole page devoted to Christmas hymns rather than Christmas party songs. Come Advent and I will be happily singing them!

Why just traditional Christmas songs?
What is wrong with modern Christmas songs.
The sort answer to that is - NOTHING! It is just that as a teacher I became aware that some children were become confused by what Christmas is really about. It kind of came to a head when I found out that a Hindu pupil didn't want to sing Jingle Bells before December in case of "bad luck" and thought that reindeer and trees were religious icons!
I am not some sort of evangelist - far from it - but I think we need to think about the message that gets through!

Jingle Maria - Mixing the Traditional and the Modern
A Modern Christmas Carol
Jingle Maria was a song I wrote to mix the fun elements of Christmas with the Christmas Story itself. I enjoyed composing and recording it and hope you will enjoy listening to Jingle Maria this Christmas. So, what is a Traditional Christmas Carol?
What makes a Traditional Christmas Song special?
Well, first of all, Jingle Bells, Auld Lang Syne and We Wish You A Merry Christmas are not hymns, although they are traditional. Robert Burns wrote For Auld Lang Syne and it has become the ultimate New year Song, We Wish You A Merry Christmas is a secular carol and a traditional folksong, Jingle Bells is a sleighing song written by James Pierpoint Lord as a celebration of Thanksgiving. These are examples of how special old songs can be adopted as traditional carols when they are not hymns.

Most of the songs you will see here are hymns, some have pagan origins which is really rather lovely, some are very old, many are originally German. That should come as no surprise because the Germans dominated music for centuries and also were at the root of the Victorian Christmas boom! I have included a couple of modern carols as they have a religious theme. You can vote for your favourite carols here.

No, Christmas started as a Pagan festival and the Nativity is only one small part of it.
