The best chocolates in America are not necessarily the most familiar or popular ones like Hersheys, but they have been rated the best. The best chocolates in the world usually are more expensive, and a true chocolate lover will be able to taste the difference.
Recchiuti Confections was rated as one of the best American Gourmet Chocolates (I had never heard of them, but then again I'm not a chocolatier). Michael Recchiuti, chocolatier, uses many fresh herbs in his creations like fresh lavender, tarragon and lemon verbena, and also has several chocolates that are dairy-free. Currently you can only get these in the United States and they don't ship to Canada or overseas.
Lake Champlain Chocolates in Burlington, Vermont is known for it's fabulous truffles. They use mostly local ingredients in their chocolates.
Some of the other best American Chocolates are easier to find, and buy, like Ghirardelli Chocolates and Godiva Chocolates.

For years I would buy Kinder Chocolate in Europe and bring it back for my daughter. She loved them! The kids loved the Kinder Surprise, a chocolate egg with a little toy inside. But Americans, being Americans, complained about the toy and that it could choke a child under 3 so these are very hard to find here. The Kinder Chocolate is the same chocolate, but in a small bar shape.

- The best chocolate I ever had was purchased in Belgium in the airport duty free shop. It was milk chocolate and I wish I could remember if it was from Holland or Belgium. Featured this lens on mine about "Who Makes the Best American Chocolate" here on Squidoo.

- I adore chocolate! I think Lindt is my favorite, but I like Ghirardelli too. I don't know why but I didn't realize Ghirardelli was a U.S. company. Their chocolate is so good I guess I assumed it must be from Europe! :-}
