The Best Christmas TV Specials Ever

Ranked #15,322 in Entertainment, #165,081 overall

Rankin And Bass

I grew up watching the Rankin Bass Christmas specials on TV and now I own most of them on DVD.

I have seen a lot of Christmas specials on TV but nothing that measures up to the likes of The Year Without a Santa Claus and Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Who could forget the Meiser Brothers and what about the Abominable Snowman and Rudolph? Truly some classic stuff!

For me watching the Christmas specials together is part of the family celebration. Christmas just wouldn't seem like Christmas without the Rankin Bass Christmas Specials! Whadda ya think?

The Year Without a Santa Claus

The Best Rankin Bass Christmas Special Ever!

The Year Without a Santa Claus first aired in 1974 but it was based upon a book that was written in 1956 by Phyllis McGinley.

Shirley Booth was the narrator as well as being Mrs. Claus, the story was told as though Mrs. Claus was telling it. Mickey Rooney provided the voice for Santa. There were other well known voices in the cast including Dick Shawn as the Snow Miser and George S. Irving as the Heat Miser.

Basically Old Santa Claus woke up one morning feeling ill and depressed. He didn't think anyone really cared about Christmas any more. He announced that he was going to take the year off. Christmas would be cancelled this year. What happens when Santa Claus decides to take Christmas off one year? If you don't know the answer to that you really need to watch The Year Without a Santa Claus

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is a close second to The Year Without a Santa Claus. To be honest I would be hard pressed to decide which one really is the best.

The Rankin Bass version of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is hands down the best. With such cool characters as the Abominable Snowman, a dentist elf, Yukon Jack and an island of misfit toys it had to be cool.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer first aired in 1964. At the time of this writing that was about 45 years ago. It's almost as old I am and it's still good!
