Classic Books Make Great Gifts - for ages 9 - 12

A good book can capture the imagination, while very subtly improving our child's knowledge of the world, of grammar and spelling, of vocabulary and a list of other benefits.  But more than that, a good book is both entertaining and thought provoking.  While there are many great books written today, here you will find the classics.

Our girls are 9 and nearly 12, so we are pleased to see this is also a range used by publishers.  Although it can be a difficult age to select books, as their reading ability far surpasses their emotional age.  Both of our girls are avid readers, so we turned to the classics.  The books found on this reading lists are all personally recommended by at least one of girls.

Good children's literature appeals not only to the child in the adult, but to the adult in the child.

The Chronicles or Narnia

by C. S. Lewis

I have already read this series out loud twice, once to each of my girls starting when they were about age 8. CS Lewis grabs the attention of children and adults and holds it through out the exciting adventures in all seven books. Narnia is a parallel world to our own, entered through a secret passage. The series follows the adventures of four children (not always the same four) as they travel repeatedly to Narnia, where their lives are much different and quite exciting.

I must say that I find television very educational. The minute somebody turns it on, I go to the library and read a book.

Sarah Plain and Tall

by Patricia MacLachlan

This 64 page book is a historical fiction chapter book. Long enough to be an interesting story, yet short enough to not feel overwhelming to those just learning to understand a plot.

Sarah, Plain and Tall

Sarah left her beautiful home in Maine to become wife to Jacob and mother to Anne and Caleb. The imagery created by Patricia MacLachlan keeps the reader interested though out the book.

And Still More Classics

I separated out these four books, as these are the books I personally would struggle to recommend to a 9-10 year old.
