Guess How Much I Love You

by Sam McBratney and Anita Jeram

I loved reading this book with my children. It was a favorite for my friend as it was one of the few books of its kind that is the story of a father and son, rather than a mom and child. It was a favorite at our house because it is such a sweet story. Our girls would get so excited about it. Sometimes I would read the entire book, other times we would take turns reading the parent the child lines. We read this wonderful little book so many times that my children had it memorized. A simple look at the charming illustrations triggered the words. Even more fun was when my girls would quote the book to me at random time. "Mommy, I love you as high as I can jump!"

Goodnight Moon was another favorite when our girls were little. It is the perfect story to read at bedtime. They never tired of the clever poem, nor of looking for the items in the colorful and lively illustrations.

Pat the Bunny

by Dorothy Kunhardt

This one I remember from my own childhood. With over six million copies in circulation, it has stood the test of time. I loved Pat the Bunny, and so did my children - again and again we would read it. This little book was published in 1940, and is one of the first interactive book for babies and toddlers. It is a perfect gift for very young children.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear or Polar Bear, Polar Bear

Both written by Bill Martin Jr. and illustrated Eric Carle

Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see . . . I see a blue horse looking at me.

Polar Bear Polar Bear what do you hear . . . I hear a boa hissing at me.

Brown Bear was the original classic, while Polar Bear appeared 25 years later. We loved both of these books, each with clever rhymes, repetitive wording patterns, and marvelous illustrations from Eric Carle.

Do You Want to Be My Friend?

Another Book By Eric Carle

I just had to add one more to my list of Eric Carle recommendations. I kept this one separate, as it is different from the others. It is a book with limited words, lots of fantastic Eric Carle illustrations and a fantastic opportunity for imagination and shared fun with your child. We always put a fun positive spin on the pictures, but after reading the reviews, I sadly see that some people saw them differently. We were a bit unsure when we first got it, but is quickly move up to the top of the girls "read this one" pile.

Love You Forever

by Robert N. Munsch

A wonderful little book. The publisher may recommend this book for 4-8 year olds, but I liked to read it aloud to a much younger age. Mostly because I made up a tune and could sing the wonderful little song, which repeats on several pages: "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, As long as I'm living, My baby you'll be." Even when I write this now, I can still hear the little tune in my head.

It is the heartwarming story of a mother and her boy. As boy grows, and things happen, mom continues to sing he same loving song to her sleeping boy. When he is grown, and she is elderly, he will sing to her.

    Wonderful selection of books for babies and toddlers! I think I read just about all of them to my girls when they were babies. Creating a love of reading is one of the best gifts we can give our children. The Velveteen Rabbit is one of my all time favorite books. I read it to my first child before she was ever born and continued to read it several times to both of my girls as they grew. Now, my little granddaughter loves for me to read it to her. She has it memorized now and "reads" it to Grandma...what joy that brings to my heart! {{{Blessed}}}
