Discover why coffee grinders or coffee mills are an important part of your morning coffee.

To brew your coffee you must first have ground coffee beans. How you get there will vary with your preferences and the coffee maker you are going to use. You could buy your coffee beans already ground. However remember that ground coffee will deteriorate quicker than whole beans.

You can grind your own beans just before you brew your coffee. The coffee grinder you use can be a hand grinder or a motorized grinder. It can be a blade grinder or a burr grinder. Which machine you use depends upon your needs and how much money you want to invest in your coffee grinding.

Three Types of Coffee Grinders

Hand Coffee Grinder

A great cup of coffee comes from great coffee beans. But the beans must be milled or ground before you can create the cup of coffee. So how do you grind those coffee beans?

There are basically three types of coffee grinders. The first one is the hand grinder. Using a hand grinder takes time and muscle. Most people will not use one because of the time and effort involved. However they still work and can work very well.

Blade Coffee Grinder

A blade grinder is the next type of coffee grinder. It uses a spinning blade to grind up the beans. This is similar to a blinder grinding up ice cubes. The problems with this type of grinder is the heat it produces and the uneven final grind. Don't get me wrong, these grinders do work. But they produce friction which products heat which causes the beans to loose some of it flavor. Also the final grind with not be uniform in thickness. Some will be finely ground and others will be coarser.

French Press - a great way to make perfect cup of coffee

The French press method is often chosen by coffee tasters. It actually gives the maker a lot of control over the final product. Coarsely ground coffee is placed in a glass carafe. Hot water is added and a lid with a plunger is placed on top. After approximately 5 minutes, the plunger is pushed down. The coffee is immediately poured into mugs.

Burr Coffee Grinder

The best type of grinder is the burr grinder. They come flat and cylindrical. Most people prefer the cylindrical type. They grind slowly so much less heat is produced. Many also come with multiple thickness settings for different types of coffee makers. And they produce an evenly ground output.

So you have three types to choose from and the best appears to be the cylindrical burr grinder with multiple thickness settings.

I am a big fan of manual grinders. I am using mostly an old Zassenhaus and it grinds the coffee just right.

I use a Cuisinart burr grinder. It does a good job...I think. It's not messy and it was cheap.

I'm a huge coffe drinker. As a currency trader I spend many early mornings in front of my trading screen with a LARGE mug.

I do my own grinding but it's an electric blade. I'll have to take a look at the Burr grinder.

I'm lazy. I buy pre-ground coffee.

Hi! I am a big coffee drinker (I have to have a vice, right) :) Anyway, I do a little of both... grinding and pre-ground packaged. I use the electric blade grinder of course... anything else is just too much work. Love your site!

Make a great cup of coffee

Here are some tips for keeping your coffee tasting as fresh and rich as possible:
* Brew your ground coffee immediately after grinding
* Once your beans are opened, keep them in a dry, dark, airtight place

Grinding your beans just before brewing will help ensure that you get a wonderfully robust flavor, so the next time you see someone scoffing at the thought of grinding one's own coffee beans, just think how unfortunate it is for them not to know the taste of truly fresh coffee!
