Several studies have shown that coffee is good for us - as long as we don't overdo it.
For those who adore that rich, distinctive, grown-up, coffee flavor, here are some of my favorite ways to incorporate coffee into recipes. Do try the wonderful pot roast beef with coffee.

Ella Hall says, "This is the most delicious coffee cake ever! It is so moist and absolutely addictive!"
C Thomas says, "It's one of the big things I miss most about New York, since having moved to Colorado in April of 2007 - Bakeries. And specifically a really good Coffee Cake. Unless you are living in the heart of Denver there are just no real bakeries to be found. King Soopers and Safeway do try but then I just don't think they really know just how good a good coffee cake should be.
Grandma's definitely fills that void for us. This is just a scrumptious coffee cake."
Coffee Ice-cream
A delicious dessert

This recipe is freely available from those nice people at Lakeland
4 egg yolks
100g (scant 1 cup) caster sugar
10g (scant 1 tablespoon) vanilla sugar
250ml (1 cup) full cream milk
200ml (3/4 cup) double cream
1 shot espresso
2 dessert spoon of instant coffee diluted with 1 tsp boiling water
Put the egg yolks, sugar and vanilla sugar into a bowl and beat until the yolks are almost white.
Gently heat the milk.
Beat the cream through the egg mixture, add both types of coffee and then add this gradually to the hot milk.
When the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, pour the cream mixture into a pan.
Heat to a moderate temperature for 2 minutes stirring constantly. Do not allow the mixture to boil.
Allow to cool to refrigerator temperature then use your preferred method of freezing - ice-cream maker or manual whisking/freezing.

M Plazek says, "I bought this sampler for my Mother and she loved it. This is a woman who does not function without two or three pots of coffee a day so she knows her coffee. As for me, I am not much of a coffee drinker but I tried most of the flavors and thought that they were very good without being overly strong. We got about two pots (8 to 12 cups) per bag without the coffee being too watered down. Definitely a hit with any coffee drinkers in your life. I sprung for the gift wrapping and was not disappointed. Be warned though, the box it is shipped in will have the name of the company and what is inside of it, so if you are trying to surprise someone maybe have it shipped to a friends house first. Otherwise very happy with the product."

Mocha Cookies
A 1990 recipe from Gourmet magazine.
* 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped
* 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
* 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, cut into bits
* 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
* 1/2 teaspoon double-acting baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 4 large eggs at room temperature
* 1 1/2 cups sugar
* 1 1/2 tablespoons instant espresso powder
* 2 teaspoons vanilla
*
In a metal bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water melt the unsweetened chocolate, 1 1/2 cups of the chocolate chips, and the butter, stirring until the mixture is smooth, and remove the bowl from the heat. In a small bowl stir together the flour, the baking powder, and the salt. In a bowl beat the eggs with the sugar until the mixture is thick and pale and beat in the espresso powder and the vanilla. Fold the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture, fold in the flour mixture, and stir in the remaining 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips. Let the batter stand for 15 minutes. Drop the batter by heaping tablespoons onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper and bake the cookies in the middle of a preheated 350° F. oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until they are puffed and shiny and cracked on top. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets, transfer them to racks, and let them cool completely. Makes about 36 cookies.

Pot Roast Beef with Coffee
Mmm... Umami!

Pot Roast Beef with Coffee
Having taken notice of MysticMama's recommendation of using coffee to enhance the flavor of roast beef and pork, I decided to undertake a little research and see if it works. I was a little nervous, if I'm honest, to take the risk of ruining a perfectly good sirloin top roast but, not being one to shy away from a challenge, I duly went ahead and used a cup of fresh-brewed coffee in the pan. The result was delicious - the meat was tender and the gravy flavorsome.
The following week I was planning a pot roast and decided to see if coffee could do its trick again. Here's what I came up with.
*A good piece of roasting beef - your choice. Mine was sirloin top roast, about 3.5lbs
*3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped or minced (depending on the size of your joint, you may need more)
*1 cup of fresh-brewed strong coffee
*1 cup of beef stock/broth (homemade, chilled, frozen, canned or stock cubes). I used chilled stock from a supermarket (organic).
*Sea salt and crushed black pepper
*1 medium onion
*Cornstarch for gravy
1. Preheat your slow-cooker on High or your oven to 180C/350F
2. Wash the beef and pat dry.
3. With a skewer or sharp knife make some holes or slits all over the meat up to about 2cms/half an inch deep.
4. Rub the garlic into the meat, getting it to go into the slits you made.
5. Rub again, this time with salt and pepper all over the outside.
6. Place in slow-cooker, pour the coffee and stock/broth over and allow to cook for 6-8 hours on medium/low heat or 2 hours in oven.
7. Baste occasionally and watch liquid level, adding water if necessary.
8. If using a slow-cooker, add the chopped onion to the liquid an hour before serving, or 20 minutes if you're using the oven.
9. Remove from slow-cooker/pan.
10. Add the liquid to a small saucepan, stir in enough cornstarch to thicken over a low heat (I admit I added a splosh of red wine too).
11. Pour over the roast. Serve with vegetables and mashed potato.
I have to say that I'm not a stickler for measuring quantities so allow your instinct to be your guide. If you prefer more or less of anything then adjust accordingly. Think about adding mushrooms and/or chopped bell peppers at the same time as the onions.
