A therapist's job is physically demanding. Administering therapy can often be as strenuous as the person undergoing it as the therapist has to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, and stand for long periods along with their patients. If that isn't enough, physical therapists often have to work heavy machinery and obese patients, putting a lot of strain on their backs, hips and knees. It can also include odd hours, to better conform to a patient's personal schedule. In then end, it's not uncommon for therapists to have their own therapist work out the strains and tears they go through as part of the "healing process".

It should be noted that one isn't a full therapist until getting a minimum master's degree from one of many accredited medical colleges with a recognized program. While still going for the Bachelor's, the student should take classes in anatomy, biology, physics, and mathematics among others After getting the four-year degree, the graduate can get a job at a hospital or clinic or continue with post-grad work in physical therapy. It should be noted that sooner or later a PT does need to work with patients, usually under the supervision of a superior, before getting certified.

What To Expect In The Medical Field

There are over 200 accredited physical therapist programs, both from on campus schools and distance learning programs. Currently, only graduate degree physical therapist programs are accredited. Master's degree programs typically are two to two-and-a-half years in length, while doctoral degree programs last three years. Passing the National Physical Therapy Examination and fulfilling state requirements such as jurisprudence exams are also required. A number of states require continuing education as a condition of maintaining licensure.

A fully registered physical therapist averages slightly over $73,000 a year, depending on where they work. It can go a bit over $100,000 if one finds the right position and location. Because most therapists work for health-care institutions, their jobs come with excellent health coverage and possible savings and continued education programs.

Currently, there are over 180,000 in the U.S. There will be a need for 30% more by 2018. The Bureau of Labor Statistics calls it one of the fastest growing professions in the country. Considering other professions have a projected growth of roughly 12%, it's easy to see the need for therapists.

Because of the acute shortage of PTs in the U.S., there are a considerable number of grants and scholarships out there for college courses online and traditional college for those interested in the field. One should consult with their school's financial aid and/or career counselor about what's out there in the way of an accredited college degree courses and financial aid. From the looks of things, as long as there are extreme illnesses, there will be a need for physical therapists for some time to come.
