Naughty Santa's Helpers Disable Traffic Cams: Best Christmas Gift Ever!

Gift-Wrapped Traffic Cameras Give Commuters a Pass

There was a lot of grumbling when Tempe, Phoenix, and surrounding areas added traffic cameras to catch red-light runners and speedsters. So everyone was tickled when a group of enterprising Santa impersonators decided to gift commuters with a camera-free commute! Without damaging any property, they covered the traffic cameras with large, gift-wrapped boxes and waved them on their merry way.

An Original Ode

by tandemonimom

Twas the week before Christmas, when down in Arizon'
A driver glanced out his window, then grabbed his cell phone.
For what to his wondering eyes should appear
But Santa's helpers, each disguised in red hat and long beard!
With ladders and big empty Christmas-wrapped boxes
They pulled off a scheme just as clever as foxes:
These helpers of Santa, so clever and cute,
Gifted car drivers in Tempe with an unwatched commute!

“The equipment was not damaged and there 'doesn't appear to be any crime,' said Tempe Police Dept.”

What Do You Think?

Gift-Wrapped Traffic Cams: Best Commuter Christmas Gift Ever?

Totally brilliant!

tandemonimom says:

No crime, meaning the Santas did not vandalize anything, and there is no law (YET!) against just blocking the camera view, so there was nothing to charge them with. (I would have thought obstructing justice, maybe, but what do I know?)

spirituality says:

I think this was a great idea - and clever to disguise themselves as well. As for the no-crime part: you mean there's no law against preventing the police from tracking traffic speed?

stargazer00 says:

I dislike the cameras and feel like I'm under surveillance when I see them. I don't advocate breaking the law but I can totally understand why they did it and can't help but cheer them on just a little.

Dangerous and stupid.

Traffic Santas Make the News

Naughty Santas giftwrap Tempe traffic cameras
A gang of Santa impersonators recently wrapped-up red light and speed enforcement cameras in Tempe as an early holiday gift for drivers in that city. A video of the unknown group blocking the police cameras from snapping pictures was later posted on You Tube to the tune of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" by the Jackson Five. The two-and-a-half minute video shows four people dressed in red suits and white beards in broad daylight placing Christmas decorated boxes and sheets over camera lenses at two locations in Tempe.

You Predict! Will public dislike eliminate photo radar? Or are we stuck with it on every street corner?

My prediction

I think it is unfortunately here to stay. Forget being confronted with the accusation against you in a timely fashion!

I agree with your prediction: here to stay. Speeding is a serious problem after all - even if we each individually would rather not get a ticket.
