Slow cooker tips: added features make them better and better, cook easy meals at home
Fall and winter meals cook up great in a crock pot!. A slow cooker will help you make dinner while you multi-task all your many jobs and preparations for family events this time of year.
Beginners can learn a new cooking technique (or refine your knowledge and recipe repertoire) by getting into slow cooking.
The Hamilton Beach Stay-or-Go 6-quart Slow Cooker has several bells and whistles that your mother would have wanted with her first crock pot, more than 30 years ago.
Even before Super Bowl parties and tailgating became common gatherings, cooking for a crowd got easier by using slow cookers to make, take and keep the food warm while everyone had a good time.
These small appliances, generically called slow cookers today, were an immediate hit because they are such a kitchen time-saver. The original Crock Pot by Rival, introduced in 1971, was an innovation. I remember when these came out, and they were as hot as any small kitchen appliance you see advertised today.
The technology continues to evolve, and models have become smaller, larger. The newest models include multiple temperature settings, removable stoneware inserts, hinged lids, clamp-on lids, and the list goes on.
Slow cookers continue to be popular because they serve the needs of busy moms and home cooks to make easy, delicious meals for their families. With a slow cooker, you can create a meal, set it cooking in the slow cooker, and have dinner underway while doing other tasks. Or, cook the meal overnight, refrigerate it while you are away from home, and reheat it at dinner time in your microwave.
The innovations found in today's slow cooker models are born directly from customer experience over the years. Stoneware inserts are removable for cleaning. Temperature controls allow for a broad range of cooking methods, and programmable features let you control the settings as your dish cooks. Some models even include a probe which is inserted into the meal, to monitor the progress of recipes that require the food to reach a certain temperature.
As you review the comments made by people who have used various slow cookers, the excitement of experienced and new slow cooker users will rub off. I know I've got my eye on these models, and several recipes as well. It's easy to see why slow cookers are popular when you think about saving money and eating better at home.

Slow cookers for every budget
Just a few of the many available models
Large slow cookers
In the 4 to 7 quart range
Family-size meals can be made in large slow cookers. Make pork and beans for a family, spareribs, chili and many other crowd-pleasing favorite recipes.Large slow cookers are also the stars of carry-in dinners, potluck events, even backyard cook-outs at the outdoor kitchen, and tailgating events. Some of these latter cooking extravaganzas include all the features of a home kitchen, including electrical hook ups.
When I used to go to holiday carry-in lunches in an office, there would always be four or five large crockpots set up at one end of the room, where there was easy access to electricity. The wonderful smell of baked beans, cabbage rolls or sweet and sour mini-franks would have everybody lining up as soon as it was time to eat.
Consider these things when you shop for your next large crockpot or slow cooker:
- Choose a cooker that you will fill, at least half but not more than two-thirds full, so that the food gets hot enough, but does not overflow while cooking.
- The locking lids, available on certain models, help you transport the slow cooker with food in it, and are handy for carry-in dinners, potluck suppers and buffets.
- Models with oval-shaped stoneware liners (vs. round) work better for roasts, whole chickens and similar foods. Choose your model considering the volume and shape of the foods you cook the most.
- Removable stoneware liners make clean up easier.

Small slow cookers
In the 1 to 4 quart range
Small slow cookers are also handy for sweet treats like fruit jams, puddings and other desserts.
And, if your family likes savory specialties such as hot dips, appetizers and sauces, a 1 or 2-quart small slow cooker is the right size to make these and keep them warm at the buffet when you are hosting a party or game-day spread. These are foods that are easy to make ahead, or convenient to put out for nibbling while the main meal cooks. By slow cooking these dishes, your time is freed and space made available for other foods, whether on the stove or counter top.

The best slow cooker recipe book for you is one that fits how you cook and the foods your family likes. If you love ground beef, or chicken soup, or follow a vegan diet, there is a book for you. And there are lots of variations.Look for the customer reviews to get a feel for what the recipes are like, and on Amazon, the Look Inside feature will show you selected pages to see some of the recipes. If the listing includes this option, you will see a link right above the picture of the book.
Some of your favorite cookbook authors have also written cookbooks on slow cooking, and if you like their other recipes, it is likely that the recipes they have developed for crock pot cooking will also tempt you.
Collections such as the Taste of Home series are compiled from recipes submitted by home cooks across the country. These are tested with real families and friends, in real home dining rooms. There's a recipe in one of the editions called Pizza in a Pot. That's at the top of my list of recipes to try.

- I love, love, love my small slowcooker for the two of us. I use it frequently. It's the perfect size for a small, whole chicken covered in whatever spice combination I'm in the mood for, or for a casserole style dish like I prepared in it today. Love your book choices, too!

- I have three crock pots and a large oven roaster. The newest one is a programmable one that will go to a warm setting if the foods finishes cooking before we're ready to eat. My husband likes to have the main meal at noon, and I like to get up late. It's better for me to put the food in the cooker before I go to bed and let it cook overnight and then stay warm until time to eat. I love crock-pots, slow cookers, whatever you want to call them.

- I love cooking many things in my slow cooker. I hope to get another someday. I have a big one, but I think it would be nice to have a smaller one to make side dishes. =D
