OOnce Upon a Time, a Long Time Ago there was a planet called Cybertron and was inhabited by an ancient race of beings called Transformers. These beings get their name from their ability to transform their "robotic type bodies" into unassuming vehicles, devices or animals. As luck would have it, Cybertron was shaken from its orbit (don't you just hate it when that happens) and while drifting through space, ran into an asteroid swarm. A group of elite Autobot warriors (the good guys), led by their fearless commander known as Prime, boarded their starship "Ark" to destroy the asteroids. After their successful mission, their enemies, the evil Decepticons taking advantage of their weakened condition, attacked their vessel. To avoid capture, Prime set the Ark on a suicide path crashing it into prehistoric planet Earth.

After many millions of years, battles continued between the Autobots and Decepticons to win control of planet Earth and its human beings. Basically, the good Autobots have become the protectors and friends of the earthlings (how sweet) and the Decepticons are out to destroy the powerless humans (darn bullies!). Even though weaker than the massive robots, our military fights the Decepticons with every advanced and futuristic weapon known and imagined by man. You have to admire their tenacity even though they can't win alone. But of course our military doesn't have to. Just when things look like it can't get worse, the Autobots show up and the excitement begins.

FFor example, our military was minding its own business in a Middle East outpost, when the Decepticons unprovoked, deliberately and with malice ambushed our guys. Out of nowhere, a Decepticon transformed itself into a nasty robotic scorpion firing its' menacing ordinance everywhere. The next thing you know, Transformers are all over the battle scene as fighter jets, helicopters, and huge robotic soldiers. On another occasion, using his stealth, Megatron (leader of the Decepticons) transforms from an ordinary police car into a gigantic, ominous, adversary centered on obliterating a helpless young human. As expected, this invites the action hero Bumblebee to the rescue. Now, usually Bumblebee is cruising Earth as a mild, mannered yellow Camero. Even though this humble champion is smaller and less powerful than the massive Megatron, this can't stop him from role as a metal guardian angel.

In the latest movie episode, "Revenge of the Fallen", a lot of the scenes are now in the Middle East, Egypt in particular. The Decepticon forces plot to take our favorite Earthling, college bound Sam Witwicky, prisoner after he learns the truth about the ancient origins of the Transformers. Optimus Prime and his Autobots form an alliance with international forces for another marathon battle. Then the stupendous mêlée carries on.

TThe Transformer chronicle continues to engage us not only because of the beloved premise of "good vs. evil" but the comic book, television and movie story writers have done such a magnificent job at developing the personalities of the many characters so we feel that we know them intimately.

We cheer on the Autobots and boo the Decepticons.
