Best Gaming Desktops 2012

You can buy a desktop already built or you can build your own custom desktop configuration that will fit your gaming style and budget.

Video & Audio - You'll need a graphic card, and depending on your needs, possibly two cards working in tandem using nVidia's Scaler Link Interface (SLI) or AMD CrossFireX technology. ATI and NVIDIA graphics cards are the most common amongst gamers, and having at least 1GB of video RAM will get the job done for most high-end games. A gaming sound card, integrated or not, must be capable of reproducing 5.1 or 7.1 channels of sound, so you should look for systems that have 5.1 or 7.1 surrounding sound cards.

Processor - A fast CPU will help the video card in games with high-end detailed graphics. A good gaming desktop must include at least a quad-core or six-core processor. Both Intel and AMD have quad-core chips that provide blistering speed.

Memory & Storage - Large amounts of short term memory (RAM) allows the computer to quickly access frequently used information or programs. A gaming desktop should have at least 4GB of RAM and sufficient hard drive space for multiple games to be installed on the system. The more RAM you have, the better. Some games can occupy over 35GB of hard drive space. Because SSDs have no moving parts, they are quieter and generally faster than hard disk drive counterparts. Again, the bigger the hard drive, the better.
