A Holiday Gift Guide to the World of Pratchett

Terry Pratchett is a unique, clever and marvellous author, who has created an addictively interesting universe, through which swims great A'Tuin, the turtle who carries the Discworld.

If you love Pratchett, or have a fan in the family, then you'll know that a new Discworld book is welcomed with the restraint of a kitten being fed for the first time in four whole hours. The latest book is usually published around October or November - slightly awkward for Christmas, as that's just enough time for them to have managed to get their hands on it already! So what else can you give your Discworld addict?

Turns out there's a fair few things! From paper models, to Discworld maps, to a selection of interesting non-fiction books that dissect and discuss the Discworld stories - or you could even buy them a Great A'Tuin turtle pendant or Librarian toy!

The Art of Discworld

By Terry Pratchett and Paul Kidby

Illustrations from the back of 'The Art of Discworld'. Most of these are cover images of books. From top left: Science of the Discworld (1) (cover illustration); The Lance Witches, and the Wee Free Men (cover illustration) Center: Death, Right: Rincewind mimicking "The Scream"; Night Watch (cover illustration); The Librarian

Paul Kidby illustrations are probably the most definitive versions of the Discworld characters in existence, He was the long standing and very successful illustrator of Pratchett's books and brought to life such characters as Vetinari, Vimes and Death so well that most people who try to draw the Discworld end up copying Kidby's interpretations (I speak from experience here....)

The book contains a lot of pictures - original cover images (and if you're in the US, you definitely want this as most of the original cover images never made it across the ocena,a nd they are far, far superior), character sketches, reinterpretations of famous paintings such as the Mona Lisa and The Scream...

...and accompanying discussion from Pratchett that is just as much worth reading as the pictures are worth looking at.

A huge project book that lets you recreate the Unseen University

This book is the size of two hardbacks put together in height (11.5 x 8.1 x 0.9 inches ) and contains 166 pages of cut-outs. With scissors, glue and time, you can gradually put together paper models of every building belonging to the UU! Including, and most especially, the Tower of Art.

The pages are thin card so will stand up well, and it comes pre-coloured. Obviously you'll have to make sure the person you're giving this to actually likes puzzles and models and such, but if they do - they'll love this. And when they finish, they can make a proper display of it!

Nanny Ogg's Cookbook

A useful and improving Almanack of Information, including Astonishing Recipes from Terry Pratchett's Discworld.

"They say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, which just goes to show they're as confused about anatomy as they are about everything else, unless they're talking about instructions on how to stab him, in which case a better way is up and under the ribcage. Anyway, we do not live in a perfect world, and it is foresighted and useful for a young woman to become proficient in those arts which will keep a weak-willed man from straying. Learning to cook is also useful."

I'm sorry - or thankful that - a large number of sections at the front and back have been covered up, or amusingly left out. Anyone who knows Nanny Ogg knows that she is the mistress of the Single Entendre and her recipes are no different.

Well, actually they are. Most of these look like real recipes, although I've never tried any, and there's enough talking from Nanny Ogg to make it worth buying just to read - not as much as you'd expect, but it balances out as you are actuallly getting a real cookbook!

Now Nanny Ogg, one of Discworld's favorite witches, is handing down some of her tasty and, above all, interesting recipes. In addition to the delights of Lord Downey's Mint Humbugs and Spicy Spotted Dick, Mrs. Ogg imparts her thoughts on life, death, and etiquette ("If you go to other people's funerals, they'll be sure to come to yours"), all in a refined style that should not offend anyone. Well, not much.

The Discworld Mappes

Both entertaining guides to the Discworld cities and countryside AND a fantastic poster!

Whether lost in Lancre, daring a dash into Death's domain, wandering the streets of Ankh-Morpork (smell that distinctive air!) or attempting to hike across the Discworld, then you're bound to get lost or eaten in minutes.

Luckily Stephen Briggs and Terry Pratchett have boldly gotten lost and chewed for your sakes and produced a range of marvellous maps. The come complete with handy little guidebooks and fold up neatly into a small booklet. One half contains a map that folds out very large, and makes a splendid poster - covered in fine details and generally very useful for gadding about the Discworld. The other half is a booklet (99 pages for Death's Domain, 369 for the Discworld Mappe, 32 for Lancre and 16 for Ankh-Morpork) containing a bit of local colour. Facts, figures, stories about famous walkers' battles to traverse the public footpaths of Lancre (a fight familiar to most people from the UK where farmers and hikers have long waged war over the meaning of 'public access')

Terry Pratchett joins up with a leading folklorist to reveal the legends, myths and customs of Discworld, together with helpful hints from Planet Earth.

Most of us grew up having always known when to touch wood or cross our fingers, and what happens when a princess kisses a frog or a boy pulls a sword from a stone, yet sadly some of these things are beginning to be forgotten. Legends, myths, and fairy tales: our world is made up of the stories we told ourselves about where we came from and how we got here. It is the same on Discworld, except that beings, which on Earth are creatures of the imagination - like vampires, trolls, witches and, possibly, gods - are real, alive and, in some cases kicking, on the Disc.

In The Folklore of Discworld, Terry Pratchett teams up with leading British folklorist Jacqueline Simpson to take an irreverent yet illuminating look at the living myths and folklore that are reflected, celebrated and affectionately libelled in the uniquely imaginative universe of Discworld.

Once More With Footnotes and Other Short Story Anthologies

The complete anthology of Terry Pratchett's short stories and articles spanning 30 years of writing

This is definitely for the serious fan, considering the price (it's a collectors item only now, as it is now longer in print). Once More With Footnotes is a compendium of short stories and articles from Terry Pratchett compiled from hsi entire career. Many of these stories can be found individually elsewhere, such as in the other short story anthologies below, but this is the only book that is all abotu Pratchett (rather than him contributing a single story). The title refers to the fact that many of these are appearing 'once more', but now with footnotes from the author.

The contents range from "The Hades Business," Pratchett's very, very first work, through "Incubust," his hysterical and masterful 100 word contribution to the Drabble Project. Along the way you can find gems like "Troll Bridge," "The Sea and Little Fishes" and "Theater of Cruelty," set in the Discworld, and, of course, the half-infamous, half-legendary short story, "Hollywood Chickens." There are some serious essays - such as "Orangutans Are Dying" and some of his comedic speeches and musing essays. Some are exclusive, some are not.

The collection was first published to in 2004 to mark the event of Terry being Guest of Honour at Noreascon Four, the 62nd World Science Fiction Convention.

Where's My Cow?

A spin-off picture book featuring familiar Ankh-Morpork characters!

Everyone who has read Thud! will recognise this book - it's the story of Vimes and his son. Every day he goes home to read the book Where's My Cow? to Young Sam, no matter what. In this spin-off version, we get to watch Vimes dashing home, reading the book - and then starting to improvise and start 'finding' distinctive characters from Ankh-Morpork instead! In many ways, it's also a parody of the mind-numbing boredom of reading picture books to small children, so stressed parents may appreciate it!

It's in a odd place because the picture book format is suitable for younger children, but the references are all to young adult and adult books! Still, this is the sort of book most people want to own, and younger children just getting into the Discworld will appreciate. The illustrations are fun, and fill the whole book, and of course, if you want to start introducing your child to Terry Pratchett young...

Terry Pratchett's Discworld Quizbooks

Hours of silliness, trivia and Discworld details written by David Langford

The Unseen University Challenge:
Terry Pratchett's Discworld
Quizbook (GollanczF.)

Questions about figgins, DEATH, mind-destroying footnotes, carnivorous Luggage, quantum butterflies, the magico-numerical significance of what we must always call twice-four or seven-plus-one, and even the precise sex of the Great A'Tuin, the enormous sea-turtle who swims eternally through space bearing (via four elephant middlemen) the Discworld ...all these and many more will keep fans of fantasy and the Discworld occupied for many happy hours.

Each of the faculties of the Discworld's greatest college of magic, Unseen University, in the heart of that great metropolis Ankh-Morpork, have provided a number of questions - and the answers, in case you don't know as much about the Discworld and fantasy as you thought you did. However, be assured there is no golden turtle buried somewhere on the Sto Plains for followers of the *hidden* clues to unearth ...this is just a myth!

Now The Wyrdest Link takes trivia to bizarre new heights, with hundreds more Discworld posers about Terry Pratchett's far-out fantasy world-questions in the merciless tradition of the Star Chamber and the Spanish Inquisition. As before, the quizbook-presented with offbeat twists and linking themes-is varied with trick questions, outrageous mind-bogglers, and the occasional near-impossible conundrum to suit Discworld fans of all levels.

The Librarian!

Plush Orangutan (not monkey) toys!

One of the favourite and familiar figures from the Discworld is the shaggy form of the Librarian, knuckling along. Transformed by a random burst of magic from the Octavo right back in the very early Discworld books, by noe he is so familiar to the wizards of the Unseen University that if you told them there was an ape in the library, they'd send the Librarian to go look for it.

Key phrases
include "Oook' "ook" "EEEK!" and "OOK OOK ook oooook"
Likes peanuts, bananas, the theatre and humourous plays that include a custard pie scene of some kind.
Dislikes being called a monkey, people touching his books.

Why not include some peanuts with the Librarian?
Cheap, funny, and will give them something to snack on that isn't sugar!

Terry Pratchett also fundraises for Orangutan conservation, and is a trustee for the Orangutan Foundation UK. Fan events such as the Discworld Conventions have adopted the Orangutan Foundation as their nominated charity - so perhaps you could donate to the Foundation instead?

Turtles! Buy Them A Great A'Tuin Of Their Own

The turtle moves... and the Discworld moves with it

Considering the entire Discworld rides around on the back of a giant turtle (and four elephants), it's a fairly significant symbol to a Discworld fan! A gift of some turtle jewelry, toys, Swarovski figurines or other turtle-themed gift, along with ...oh, something straight from the typewriter or Pratchett, should have them swooping it happily around!

Why, I created the image in the introduction above at the tender age of seventeen, using some toy animals we had around and was far too pleased with myself about it!

For real-life-Pratchett-turtles, check out the Psephophorus terrypratchetti, a fossil sea-turtle from the Eocene epoch of New Zealand named after Pterry by palaeontologist R. Köhler in 1995 (in the journal article "A new species of the fossil turtle Psephophorus (Order Testudines) from the Eocene of the South Island, New Zealand".

Books To Avoid

These books aren't worth it, except for the absolute completist

These books, frankly, are only worth it if you have to absolutely own every last book about Pratchett. They bring nothing new or particularly interesting to the series. The Wit & Wisdom book is a collection of quotes - handy for the coffee table, but not particularly interesting ont heir own. There's no new information, and a lot of the good quotes aren't even there. And what is there makes little sense without context.

Cabbages.

See? Not funny! (Unless you were suddenly reminded of the endless cabbage plains of Sto Lat, in which case you are probably giggling uncontrollably)

And the Secrets of The Wee Free Men ...etc book frankly gets a lot of its facts wrong, is not particularly about the Wee Free Men and is far surpassed by several other books on this page analysing the writing and folklore of the Discworld.
