The 10 Very Best Dog Food Brands in North America

After more than three years and hundreds of hours of research on dog food ingredients, I decided I needed to share what I learned with other dog parents before it was to late for their dog.

I decided the fastest way to help the most dogs, was to publish a Kindle book that listed the best commercial dog foods that were safe to feed your dogs.. SEE LINK TO BOOK BELLOW

Here is the description from the Amazon book listing...

Don't Feed Your Dog Tonight Until Reading This Description

This book was written by a fellow dog parent that spent the last three years trying to improve the health of his Beagle (Copper) who started to have seizures. His hundreds of hours of research show without question that too many brands in the dog food industry care more about profits than health and safety of our dogs.

The AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) and the FDA has been controlled and manipulated by the pet food industry into allowing them to legally misrepresent the ingredients listed on their products and deceive the dog parents with current labeling laws.

The Author is quoted as saying "I strongly urge and even pray that all dog parents learn the basic skills needed to feed their dogs a healthy meal each day%u2026 nothing less than the longevity of their dog's life is at stake"

While this book starts that education process, by giving the Dog Parent the basic skills needed to understand the difference between a good and bad dog food formula, the Author thought it was more important to quickly get into the hands of all Dog Parent a list (13) of some of the best dog foods reviewed by the Author.

Just as important the Author lists (6) formulas that you should stop feeding your dog now! Some on this list will be found on your Vets shelves, and this book goes into great detail of why they are hazardous to your dog's health.

The Author swears he will not stop writing books on this subject until all dog parents can pick up any brand of dog food and be confident that they understand what the ingredients list and the labeling really means.

This means books written with more detailed information on ingredients and labeling laws than the book above, but this book (The Best Dog Foods to Buy) will have an immediate impact on your dog's health starting today.

Do not feed your dog today until after buying and reading this book.

This book was written by a dog parent for dog parents and a portion of the profits from this book and all future books published by Sugar Run Nursery Publications will be donated to no-kill shelters, spay and neuter education and rescue groups so please help by buying this book now.

More Than Just Dog Food

There is so much more to keeping your dog healthy than just the food... granted food is at the top of the list, but we have found out we needed to look at all areas when trying to extend our dogs lives.

We found that a healthy dog is also a happy dog, you see dogs spend their dogs entire lives wanting nothing more than to please you. The problem is we really don't speak each others language and no matter what you think they don't understand everything you are saying. Therfore they can spend their lives confused not knowing exactly what to do to please us.

This state of confusion causes health issues with the dog and the best way to have a healthy dog is to have a well trained dog and also one that has been properly cared for.

Most Vets Pimp These Brands

Do they even read the labels before they recommend this garbage?

Now lets take a look at the ingredients of three of the top brands sold or should I say pimped by Vets and pushed with the help of gigantic advertising budgets,

TO SEE WHAT NAME BRAND THIS IS GO TO OUR FAN PAGE NOW

Ingredients:
Corn Meal, Chicken By-Product Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Fish Meal (source of fish oil), Chicken, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Dried Egg Product, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols, a source of vitamin E, and Citric Acid), Natural Chicken Flavor, Brewers Dried Yeast, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Flax Meal, Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid, Beta Carotene, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Moninitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate, Choline Chloride, Dl-Methionine, L-Tryptophan, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, L-Carnitine, Rosemary Extract

Where do I start... this looks like a chicken formula, except the main ingredient which by law needs to be listed first on the label is Corn Meal. It gets worst, the 2nd ingredient is "Chicken byproducts, which can be anything including Chicken carcass, including necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines. It is exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidably in good processing, per AAFCO guidelines... which is a joke!

I could keep picking this ingredient list apart, but lets look at the next brand and see if it's any better.

TO SEE WHAT NAME BRAND THIS IS GO TO OUR FAN PAGE NOW

Ingredients:
Corn Meal, Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal (natural source of Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine), Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Fish Meal, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Natural Chicken Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Brewers Dried Yeast, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Salt, Flax Meal, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Vitamins [Vitamin E Supplement, Vitamin A Acetate, Ascorbic Acid, Beta-Carotene, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid], DL-Methionine, Minerals [Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate], Choline Chloride, Dried Chicken Cartilage (natural source of Chondroitin Sulfate and Glucosamine), Dicalcium Phosphate, L-Carnitine, Rosemary Extract.

At least this one has Chicken listed as the 2nd ingredient, but still the first ingredient is corn meal and the 3rd is Chicken by-products

One of the problems when a food has corn products as its #1 ingredient is the fact that dogs find it difficult to properly digest corn... the reason the manufactures use corn is it's a cheap form of protein, but a dogs digestive system is more conducive to animal proteins and fats.

TO SEE WHAT NAME BRAND THIS IS GO TO OUR FAN PAGE NOW

Ingredients:
Ingredients Ground Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Beet Pulp, Soybean Oil, Dried Egg Product, Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Iodized Salt, Choline Chloride, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Vitamin E Supplement, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

What do these guys have against real chicken, and what's up with all this corn? You don't even want to know what Dried Egg Products are and all three of these major brands list it as an ingredient.

Dog Food Ingredients Poll

The FDA allows the pet food industry to get away with deceptive wording on their dog food labels.

This is done because the industry spends millions for lobbyists and the laws are written so that they are weak. Also the industry is basically self regulating and very little enforcement efforts are put into pet food.

So that being said;

Go! and Now! from Petcurean are great foods too... I'm very surprised they are not on the list. I used to feed my dogs Orijen until they changed the formula and added Citric Acid as a perservative. I have a Saint Bernard and a German Shepherd, both breeds are prone to "bloat" and Citric Acid is not good for them, that is why I switched to Go! Grain Free Endurance Formula. I think that Go!, Now!, and Orijen make the best pet foods out there and believe me, I've done many, many hours of research. Netura which makes Innova, EVO, California Natural & a few other brands used to be great foods too, but they just sold to Proctor & Gamble, so I am sure the quality control on these foods will go way down once P&G takes over.

When making homemade dog food, it is amazing how much food the larger breed dogs eat. Making food for the Beagle is easy, the Lab/Dane mix is a completely different story :-)

25 years ago my dogs stayed in great shape on Purina Dog Chow. It's too bad we no longer know what used to be in it. I do know there was not a long list of added vitamins and minerals. Our last two dogs developed subcutaneous tumors, something I had never seen on any dog before. A neighbor's dogs had the same problem. I'm ready to seriously consider making my current dog's food from scratch, as there are ingredients listed in the recommended foods that I'd be concerned about, and the term "organic" should never be confused with "safe."

I agree and that is why both our dogs eat 90% home made food. The problem is many people will not take the time to make their own food and that is why I list the best commercial foods I can find. Homemade food is the way to go!

To the person with question about Natural Balance,
I tried the Natural Balance Duck and Potato with my Bichon. She broke out in hives and threw up numerous times. This is supposed to be an ALLERGEN FORMULA food. We wrote to the company and were very upset. It cost us 200 dollars at the emergency vet. We were so scared she wasn't going to make it.

I make my own food for the supper meal but have been giving my Shih-Tzu/Maltese the Natural Balance Fish & Sweet Potato for breakfast for about 6 months with no problems. My other dog I had was severly allergic to potatoes but I never found out until she was 10 yrs. I am doing an elimination diet with this one & Natural Balance seems to have the least ingredients & natural vitamins. She does like the Surf & Turf from Fromm though & it's teeny so I might switch. I hope your baby will be okay.

I feed PetGuard Lifespan. It "fits" the criteria above, and it along the lines of Innova. My dogs have done great on this food, better than any others, even Innova, California Natural, Newman's Own, etc. I add some cooked meats, veggies and kefir.

I would not use natural balance because of their recall a few years back and the fact that they do not make their own food. Irt is made by Diamond. Innova, california natural, orijen would some of my choices.

This is late, but check out www.dogfoodanalysis.com. Seems to be an unbiased site which analyzes most commercial dog food, gives a review and rates them from 1-6 stars.

Most lines of Natural Balance seem to be in the 4star category.
My Boxer is 1yr 3mo was on Wellness/Super5. No complaints but after checking out that site I want to step up. So, for now, I'm going to wean to Blue Wilderness for a try, since it seems to be the most easily attainable and reasonably priced of the foods (for me) on the "6 star" level.

You should pick a food for your dog that is made by a reputable company, but most reputable companies have numerous lines so be careful. Go with one that has good meat content, grain free, good source of carbs( ie. sweet potatoe), fish oil or other good sources of omegas, probiotics vitamins, and meets any specific special needs of your dog. Unfortunately, price is a big factor for me, so I look for the most affordable food that meets my criteria.

Just a note - I don't believe Canidae should still be on peoples' lists of best foods. It used to be fantastic, but then changed their formula (there's a class action suit against them right now because so many dogs have been sickened by the change). My greater concern is that they are manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods - Diamond has an across the board policy to use fish meal that has been pre-preserved with Ethoxyquin, a known carcinogen.

Hello! My dog, German Sheppherd mix, is about 1 1/2. He does not like to eat!!! I've changed his formula several times and I still have to find all type of tricks for him to eat each time. He's had skin allergies and his nose peels off and gets pink. I think he's allergic to chicken. I changed him to Dick Van Patten's Natural BalanceĀ® Vegetarian Formula and I mix it with Eukanuba Naturally Wild Country-Grown Turkey & Multigrain Formula. I think he likes the veggie formula on its own better but not so much anyway. Are these dry foods OK or should I just use the veggie formula or change altogether? Please help. I need him to be happy and healthy!!

I don't know what formula your feeding, but I took a look at five of natural balance's dry formulas and I can't see any problems.

It looks like a good dog food to me.
