What to Give a Dog Who Just Likes to Seek, Chew and Destroy?

Since dogs are wild animals at heart, it shouldn't surprise anyone that dogs like to chew and, for some dogs, they're only satisfied when they outright destroy. Now, for these types of tough chewers, dog toys can become quite the expensive habit. But, don't worry, there are dog toys that are designed to keep both your dog and your wallet happy. Dog toys that are specifically designed to be satisfying to chew on but built tough enough to last.

One of the most popular type of dog toys that owners of powerful chewers swear by are chew toys that are manufactured with a material that is hard but soft, durable but bendable. It's difficult for dogs to really enjoy the chewing pleasure of biting on a surface that's hard - like plastic or a stiff rubber. Sure, these types of dog toys are tough and durable but they aren't exactly curbing a dog's instinctual desire to chew. However, dog toys made with a material that is both durable but still soft, are the perfect alternative.

A good example of this type of material is West Paw Design's exclusive material Zogoflex. The material is non toxic , earth friendly and their dog toys are made in the U.S.A. Here are some dog toys made with this material that dog owners swear by: West Paw Hurley, West Paw Tux, and West Paw Bumi. Many dog owners say that dog toys made with Zogoflex are more durable and longer lasting than even Kong dog toys.

What About Power Chewers Who Only Like to Chew on Soft Dog Toys?

If you have a dog who refuses to chew on any type of hard or medium type of dog toy, you are not alone. There's a ton of finicky dogs out there who just don't find any sort of chewing satisfaction in chewing on hard dog toys - they just don't like the way these type of dog toys feel on their teeth and gums. But, what's the alternative besides those cheap-o, rip-'em-apart-in-a-second stuffed
animals?

Well, because of the high demand for durable soft dog toys, there are now several manufacturers that make tough and durable soft dog toys. These soft-but-strong dog toys are made with extra fabric and stitching layers, or made with super-strong materials, or have rubber chew points added. Of course, they are still soft dog toys so they aren't indestructible, but they are a lot stronger than ordinary stuffed animals. So, owners of soft-dog-toy-preferring dogs can be happy that a strong, tough and durable soft dog toy does exist.

One manufacturer of tough-but-soft dog toys is Tuffy's. This line of dog toys have 7 layers of stitching and 4 layers of material to make their soft dog toys fun to chew yet tougher than the average stuffed dog toy. The toughest soft dog toy they make is the Tuffy's Mega Ring. Of course, they also have durable soft dog toys in the shape of a shark, turtle, etc.

Another soft dog toy manufacturer is Vibram K9. They make their soft-yet-strong dog toys out of the same two durable fabrics found in high-end sneakers. Some of their dog toys even have a Vibram natural rubber chewing nub added for dogs who occasionally like something hard to chew on. Some examples of Vibram K9 tough soft dog toys are the Worm, Sea Creature and Gator.

An Indestructible Dog Toy?

Does such a thing even exist?

Every dog owner ponders this question at one time or another. Usually after their chew-happy pooch has just destroyed a $15 dog toy in less than 10 minutes. The problem with making a completely indestructible dog toy is that it most likely wouldn't be much fun or even enticing to chew. What would such a dog toy even be make of to be able to be indestructible by even the biggest dog with the strongest jaws? Hard plastic? Metal?

The closest thing to a completely indestructible dog toy is a virtually indestructible dog toy which is exactly what the Boomer Ball prides itself on being. And, guess what it's made of? Yep, hard plastic. However, it's not designed to be a chew toy (as that's not even possible with a 10" ball)! It's a rolling ball that energetic dogs like to push with their noses. Now, you may ask, "why didn't they just say it's indestructible? It sure looks indestructible." Well, most likely this goes back to the days of the "indestructible" Ginsu Knives (remember them?) Back then, it was fun for customers to see how indestructible these knives really were. So, instead of cutting tomatoes and cucumbers, people were cutting through metal cans and tree branches. Why? Because the company said they were indestructible and even offered a nice money-back guarantee. I'm sure the folks over at Boomer Ball learned a thing or two from Ginsu and decided on going with the safer "virtually indestructible" because let's face it, pretty much anything CAN be destroyed if someone really, really tries (or is given an incentive) to destroy it.
