Why Do People Dream?

All of us dream during sleep but we don't always remember them. Most of our dreams occur during the early hours of the morning when we are in the deepest stages of sleep but if you don't wake up during that sleep stage you won't remember them.

Dreams are the unconscious mind filing away the previous day's events, a bit like saving files onto the hard drive of your computer. Our worries, anxieties, desires and how we are feeling are all processed during the REM or dreaming stage of sleep. The images that you see in your dreams can be interpreted into solutions and show us what's going on in our minds.

Reccuring dreams are often the mind trying to tell you something that's being ignored. The dream stops occuring when the problem has been solved.

Dream Interpretation of The Most Common Dreams

Being chased by a ferocious animal or axe wielding maniac often means that you find it difficult to face up to something. It could also be a situation that is catching up with you such as an unpaid bill.

If you dream that your teeth are falling out it doesn't mean that they will! It's often dreamt by someone very concerned about their appearance. Maybe they are afraid of getting old and feeling undesirable. Teeth are a major part of your looks and if they fall out your face will look sunken and old. A trip to the dentist will reassure you that all is well with your teeth.

To dream of being naked or only partly dressed in front of people usually means that you are very self conscious and shy. It's a fear of being exposed and feeling vulnerable.

If you dream of flying through the air it can be a very exhilarating experience and often means you are rising above a situation and are in control.

Falling in a dream can indicate a fear of failure and feelings of insecurity. You may be going through a bad patch in a relationship or you are having concerns about your job security.

How To Keep a Diary Of Dreams

A diary of dreams is a great way to unlock the mysteries of your subconscious.

When you first wake up in the morning you may recall a dream you just had. Keep a notebook and pen on your bedside table and write down in detail as much as you can remember about that dream. If you don't do this straight away you will soon forget .

Describe how you felt during this dream and note any colours or people that you recognise. Look at the setting of the dream and see if it's familiar to you in any way. Maybe it takes place in a building you know such as a house or office. Your dream may show you a place you have visited in the past.

Over time you may notice a pattern emerging. It may be that you are very self conscious and you dream of being naked in front of a crowd of people, or you may dream that you turn up for work in your nightdress and slippers! These dreams are trying to get you to face up to an issue or fear that you need to overcome.

Your diary of dreams may also inspire you to write a novel or paint a picture. When you are asleep your mind isn't full of the day to day trivia and worries and is much more creative. If you are brainstorming ideas for a creative project tell yourself before you go to sleep that you will remember your dreams.

You may wake up to find yourself writing lots of notes on ideas you have just experienced in your dream. They may be crazy but you may find some starting point to work from

Nightmares

Nightmares are very common among small children and is part of normal development. If a child continually experiences bad dreams then he or she may need some sort of therapy.

Nightmares are less common among adults and may be the result of a traumatic event such as the death of a loved one or a bad accident. Gulf war veterans may experience post traumatic stress and this could trigger nightmares when they are reliving some of the terrible scenes they have witnessed.

Nightmares can be caused by certain medications or withdrawal symptoms after ceasing to take them. They can also result from eating a large meal shortly before going to bed.

Nightmares tend to be long and very intricate dreams and their intense nature may cause you to experience very strong emotions during them. They may be so overwhelming that they wake you up and tend to occur during the early hours of the morning towards the end of your sleep.

If you continually get nightmares take a look at your lifestyle. Are you very stressed? You may be very worried or anxious about something and this could be causing you to get bad dreams.

Getting plenty of exercise will help you to get a good night's sleep. Try drinking a cup of chamomile tea before you go to bed as it has calming properties.
