The Best Drugstore Make-up

Over the last 10 years, the cosmetics industry has multiplied more rapidly than anyone could imagine, with the eternal search for perfection constantly making the industry strive for more beautifying, expansive and expensive make-up.This constant barrage of new products, cosmetics jargon and overbearing sales reps can make shopping for make-up more daunting than it should be, so I hope this lens will give you an idea of the best drugstore make-up products on the market.

Of course, everyone's needs and demands are different, so what I like may not suit you exactly, but I have made sure every product I list here has been tried and liked by other people I know, and that the general consensus online for the product is good. While high-end products may be slightly better in quality, the majority of us do not have hundreds to spend on make-up, and in this lens I will show you good products do not always come with designer price tags.

Foundation

Foundation is an absolute cosmetic staple - it is the underpinning of your whole make-up look, the foundation of your make-up, as it is rightly named, and it is perhaps the most important make-up product you can buy. Therefore, it is important you get one that suits your needs and skin tone. Most drugstore brands aim to provide full coverage, though I've found many are orangey in colour or smell horrible.

The best brand of drugstore foundation I have found so far is definitely Revlon.

The Revlon Colorstay foundation is often compared to the considerably more expensive MAC Studio Fix Fluid, and rightly so. It gives full and flawless coverage, is available in a wide spectrum of colours (as often I cannot find a foundation to perfectly match my fair skin) and stays perfect throughout the day. It does not appear cakey like some other drugstore foundations, and is very blendable. It costs between £10 and £12, so is a little more expensive than other drugstore brands, but in my opinion, foundation is one product you should spend a little more on as it is the basis for the rest of your foundation, and I have found it to be well worth the money.

Concealer

ConcealerConcealer is the second product on my list of must-haves. If your complexion is perfect, you have no blemishes or dark circles, then it is not worth buying and you are very lucky, but unfortunately, most of us are not blessed with perfect skin. I have two favourite concealers, each suited to slightly different needs, and I use each as and when I need them.

The first is L'Oréal Paris True Match Touche Magique Concealer. It is a light, shimmery concealer perfect for under-eye circles, an can also be used on the cheekbones as a highlighter, but is not thick enough to fully cover imperfections.

The second I love is Maybelline Dream Mousse Concealer. It has a thick creamy consistancy instead of the more common liquid, so it covers dark circles and imperfections easily. As it is creamy, it is slightly sticky, so make sure you seal it in place with a translucent powder.

Bronzer

This is just a personal preference, but I definitely prefer bronzer over blusher, because I think the golden glow is more natural than the pink colour of blusher for my skin tone. However, particularly pale girls can look stunning with pink blusher, and dark skinned girls also tend to use pink tones as it is more visible on their skin, but for me, bronzer looks better.
How you apply bronzer is rather different than blusher, as it should be applied underneath your cheek bone from your cheek curving upwards to the temples, and not on the cheek bone itself. This contours the face as it slims down the sides of the face and makes the cheekbones look more pronounced.
The product I use most commonly to contour is actually just a Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation that is several shades darker than my skin tone, which works very effectively as it is matte and not sparkly so it does not reflect light.
The product I use on top of my powder is Rimmel Natural Bronzer, as it is not excessively dark or shimmery. I also love the Body Shop Brush-On Beads.

Mascara

Mascara seems to be one of the most expensive make-up products, though perhaps rightly so, as some cheaper brands are frankly rubbish. Unfortunately, for a good mascara, you will need to splash a little more cash, though hopefully this section will point you in the right direction.

I'm still searching for the perfect drugstore mascara, as I've used too many that are infuriatingly ineffective, but I have found a few that I love.

The one that gives the most dramatic volume in my opinion is Rimmel Sexy Curves Mascara, and I also love The Body Shop Super Volume Mascara, as I much prefer the brush wand to the more common plastic wands as it grips the eyelashes better.

Eyebrows

Eyebrows are such an important feature of our faces, and they are so often neglected. Eyebrows frame your eyes which are the focal point of your face, so you should make sure they are tweezed to suit your face shape, and then they can be defined with make-up.

My very favourite eyebrow set is the Ruby & Millie Brow Colour Duo. It is a UK brand, so may be a little bit more difficult to buy elsewhere, but I really do recommend you try, because the duo contains both a wax to define the shape of the eyebrow, and a powder tint to make your brows stand out. It doesn't make your eyebrows look painted on, but is really natural and subtle.

Eyeliner

I love eyeliner because of it's versatility - it can be a subtle way to enhance your eyes, a classy cats' eye look, it can be blended into a smokey eye, or it can be even more creative should you wish.
After first discovering liquid eyeliner, I am addicted, and I don't think I could go back to normal pencils. It allows for far more precision application and is much darker than most pencils I have used. My favourite liquid eyeliner is Rimmel Liner Pinceau because it has an extremely fine applicator brush.
I also like the Revlon ColorStay Liquid Eye Pen as it is easier to use than liquid eyeliner with a brush as it is applied with a marker type pen but is as dark and long-lasting as liquid eyeliner.
