Why Electric Cooktops?

Why I decided to review the best electric cooktops 2012?

When I was a kid I remember having the gas range as the only cooking appliance in our apartment. There are still regions where ranges are more common but separate cooktops and ovens are quickly gaining popularity.

Why?

I believe it gives you more options. You can select models of different types and manufacturers and also easily install them where you want.

There are several types of cooktops - gas cooktops, induction cooktops, and smoothtop electric cooktops. In this article I will describe pros and cons of smoothtop electric cooktops and try to find the best electric cooktop.

Pros and Cons of Electric Cooktops

Electric cooktops have both pros and cons if compared with other types of cooktops

Pros of Electric Cooktops:
- cheaper than others (especially induction cooktops)
- heat faster than gas burners
- easy to clean if you have special cleanser

Cons of Electric Cooktops:
- hard to evaluate the flame visually
- heat slower than induction cooktops
- can be easily damaged by dropped pots
- can be damaged by some spilled foods (avoid spilling sugar at all costs!)

Range vs Separate Electric Cooktop And Oven

Pros of separate cooktop
- you can install it anywhere you want
- you can save if you think you do not need oven
- in some price ranges cooktop/oven combos are still cheaper than stand-alone ranges

Cons of cooktops
- more expensive installation

What To Look For In Electric Cooktop

Size - most of cooktops are 30 inches wide but you can also find some 36" models

Type -smoothtops vs coil cooktops - smoothtops are better looking and easier to clean but coils can be cheaper in the long run because coils can be replaced individually

Controls - I believe cooktops with controls on the surface are easier to use. Latest generation tops have touch sensitive controls that look hiht-tech and are easy to clean

Warning Lights - cooktop should have at least one warning light that lets you know that surface is hot. Cooktops with warning lights for each element tend to be safer

Expandable elements - most cooktops have at least one expandable element where you can switch from larger element to smaller element.
