Family Skiing Holiday

This lens offers some tips and advice on planning a family ski holiday in Austria. From my experience Austria offers the best facilities for a family ski holiday.

After the care free years skiing with friends as part of a group or alone with your partner arranging a ski holiday with a young family can be really daunting. I found myself with this predicament a few years ago. After a seven year break from the slopes I was eager to introduce my son to the joys of skiing.

When booking before my priorities were challenging ski runs, après ski and somewhere half decent to stay. Getting on the ski bus wasn't an issue.

Things to consider before booking a family ski holiday

Now taking two children under 7 skiing what factors did I need to consider.

Cost
Transfer time from the Airport
English speaking Ski School
The right ski clothes for the children
Do I need to take childrens ski helmets
Short lift queues
How close is the Ski School to the hotel?
Does the hotel have family rooms?
Off the mountain activities e.g. Is there a swimming pool in the hotel or nearby
What are the eating arrangements, especially with 2 fussy eaters?
Snow sureness

Having been to a number of resorts across Europe I believe Austrian resorts are best set up for family ski holidays. Transfer times to the majority of resorts are under two hours and the English speaking ski schools are excellent.

The following Ski Resorts are the some of the best for family skiing in Austria.

Katschberg

Katschberg

Katschberg is a small ski resort situated on the border of the Carinthia and Salzburgerland provinces. Transfer time is approximately 1.5 hours from Salzburg Airport. With its slopes reaching up to 2300 metres, the resort offers a great snow record and stunning views across pine-clad landscapes as far as the eye can see. Beginners and intermediates on their ski holiday are well catered for with the mainly wide, uncrowded blue and red runs leading down the two sides of the valley.

Most of the hotels in Katschberg have ski-in ski-out access. The Hotel Cristallo, with its dedicated nursery slopes and children's areas along with indoor and outdoor swimming pools and spa make it an excellent choice for a family ski holiday. The small village retains a traditional atmosphere, its centre offering a few shops, restaurants and bars and a fairly quiet and definitely relaxing atmosphere.

There are 66 km of ski runs in total with the longest section, the new A1 run, of six kilometres running from the top of Aineck Mountain to the village of St Margarethen. Skiing is suitable for all ages and levels from beginner to intermediate. There are 16 lifts with a capacity of 2,400 people per hour.

Katschberg's ski season runs from mid-December to a week after Easter, with snow guaranteed thanks to the cutting-edge snowmaking machines.

Other family activities include night sledding from the Gamskogel Hut mountain restaurant down into the valley on a 1,5km floodlit slope.
Ice Skating in the village square in the centre of Katschberg
Night skiing between 7 and 9 pm on flood lit slopes, free of charge (with valid ski pass). For those that can't get enough during the day!

Obergurgl

type=text

Obergurgl is a traditional old village, set in a remote spot near the head of its valley - the highest parish in Austria and usually under a blanket of snow. and recently voted the most snow sure resort in Europe.

Obergurgl is great for beginners and intermediates, which, along with good ski schools, makes for an excellent family ski holiday destination

Although it's a small place, the village is split into three main parts. At the entrance to the resort is a cluster of hotels near the Festkogl gondola. The road then passes another group of hotels set on a little hill to the east, around the ice rink (beware steep, sometimes treacherous walks here). Finally you come to an attractive little square with the church, a fountain, and the focal hotel (Edelweiss und Gurgl).

Even higher Hochgurgl, linked by a mid-mountain gondola, is little more than a handful of hotels at the foot of its own area of slopes.

Alpbach

Alpbach Piste MapIf you are looking for a traditional Austrian village which is pretty as a picture Alpbach in the Tirol is the one. It has long been a favourite with British families. Blessed by sunny slopes, full of charm and easy access to the nursery slopes keep families returning year after year. Intermediates may find the resort is not too extensive but the slopes there are great for confidence building and honing your technique. The village's ski schools are very child-friendly. Transfer times are short if you arrive in Innsbruck, the closest airport, which is 50km away.

The transfer from Innsbruck airport takes under 30 minutes. Children-friendly ski slopes which are close to the resort centre and the main ski school offers a ski kindergarten and a dedicated children's ski school.

Ellmau

type=textEllmau is one of the many village resorts in the SkiWelt ski area. Each resort in the SkiWelt has a different character and Ellmau has long cherished its reputation as the "family resort".

Being loacted between Innsbruck and Salzburg, there is a good choice of flights,. There is a variety of accommodation in Ellmau which is more family oriented than it neighbours which can attract those looking for a youthful party atmosphere.

The ski area is convenient for the village, but the resort altitude is not that high.

Kaprun

Kaprun is located right at the end of the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. This guarantees you will always have somewhere to ski and a fantastic back drop. Kaprun has a nice selection of nursery slopes for beginners and great off piste areas for the advanced skiers. Kaprun is near to Zell am See and there are local buses connecting the two resorts. Your lift pass also covers both resorts.

Kaprun has access to 130km of slopes over 4 different areas. There is a sports centre in the village which has a wide variety of facilities. The amazing scenery of the Glacier and good range of high altitude skiing combined with all the local bars and restaurants make the Ski Resort of Kaprun a good all round resort on and off the piste.

Nice! I've tried skiing in Japan and New Mexico -- have never tried (or been to) Europe for skiing. Congrats on a Squidoo masterpiece!
