Selecting New Flat Screen TV in Mid-priced Range

Are you looking for the best flat screen TV under 1000? There are a great number of HDTVs that can be found in the mid-priced range. How to then select the right one for you? Best way to do it is first think of the features you want and then search for a right size and price tv.

Here you can find the checklist I used and my recommendation for the best 46" flat screen HDTV under $1000.

Checklist I Used to Select My TV

How to select the best flat screen tv for you?

Before I went for shopping a new flat screen tv, I made a research and collected the following checklist of features I wanted it to have. 1,2 and 3 were the most important ones for me.

1. Good SD (Standard Definition) performance as well as excellent HD (High Definition, Blu-ray)
2. Sharp moving image quality (no ghosting, blurring or smearing of picture) with 120 Hz technology (100 Hz in Europe)
3. Connections (at least 2*HDMI, PC input, USB and connections for older devices)
4. Usability (speed of changing channels, using menu, remote control design)
5. Gaming performance
6. Price vs quality
7. Design

I was also trying to find it in the size of 42-46" with the above features and within my budget. After making the list, I had to decide what type of tv would fit for me: LCD or plasma.

Quick summary

LCD or Plasma

Things might have changed from what it was when I bought my flat screen tv couple of years ago.

I didn't want to get the plasma because of its bigger power consumption. There was also some questions about additional noise coming from plasma tvs when bright areas were shown. And although plasma tvs processed motion picture better, they had color problems with fast moving image. In the new models, this isn't anymore a problem.

Of course LCD had it own cons, like black colors not being as good, but I preferred it anyway and selected the Samsung LCD 46 inch model.

But how is it today? LCD or plasma? Or is it anymore about them or is there something else already (remember, we are talking about TVs under $1000)? And what is then the best tv in the mid-priced range?

Which HDTV I Would Buy Today?

My recommendation for the best flat screen TV in mid-priced range

I would definitely consider the following (best selling 46" at Amazon) LCD model from Samsung.

Samsung LN46C630 46-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV
List Price: $1099.99
Price: Available at final checkout. (01/02/11) (TV Low Price Guarantee)
- No blur with Auto Motion Plus
- HDMI: Multiple connections, one solution
- Sharp images and bright colors with Full HD 1080p
- One simple remote control with Anynet+
- Instant music and video-sharing with ConnectShare
- 120,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio
- 4 HDMI Inputs

It has almost all the features in my list except the connections does not include so many possibilities to hook up the older devices. But, I think today I wouldn't need them so much and therefore this flat screen tv would be my first choice in the mid-priced range.

Safety with Kids

Big TVs Can Be Quite Heavy

If your family has kids learning to walk and starting to explore the world around them I would seriously consider wall mounting the tv or if placing the tv on a stand then at least securing it to the wall. This would keep your kids and tv in safe.

If you are worried about possible scratches in the soft screen of LCD, you can by a screen cover to protect your tv. It will allow you to watch your tv normally and also minimize the reflections.

We have had the LCD couple of years now and there are few scratches which are visible in a day light, but not at all when the tv is on.
