Your turn: Am I right?

From the lens The Best Free Linux Games Ever.

Linux is not known as a gaming platform. These are not really hard core gamer or even casual gamer games. But on Linux, these stand out as the best (native) free games available. Do you know better games?

I've been using Linux and Unix for years, but I didn't know much about these games. Useful information.

OpenTTD has its own free replacements for the game files, so one needs nothing of the original game anymore. Been like that for years, so I wonder how old this article is? Nevertheless, thanks for pointing out all these games.

Nice lens! Personally I prefer FPS games like Sauerbraten, Warsow, Tremulous, OpenArena, etc. and... Super Tux Kart ;)

thanks, I think my son would like nethack. I'll introduce it to him.

I'd recommend (I probably need to some more on the article there) the SlashEM variant - its basically the same game (it started from the same code), but with a few more fun bits - more magical items, more monster types etc.

Excellent. I was just wondering where we were at for Linux RPGs. It's ages since I've had time to play, but hope to fix that soon.

Nice lens! I've actually haven't heard of most of the games listed on this lens besides Nethack and Battle for Wesnoth.
  • charle Dec 29, 2010 @ 10:09 am | delete

What about FreeDink A nearly endless RPG with a large community. Not the best graphics, but a very enjoyable and addicting game, with tons of mods and extra levels.

Factory to Sawmill & Sawmill to factory sounds quite interesting.

    No World of Goo? :)
  • dannystaple Sep 10, 2010 @ 1:58 am | delete
While world of goo is undoubtably cool, and does play on linux, it misses the criteria for this in that it is not free. There is a free trial for it though. Perhaps, if I make a lens on just Games For Linux (without the free qualifier) then it would make it there.
  • jp1978 Sep 19, 2010 @ 9:13 pm | delete
Right, I forgot! I got it with the Humble Indie Bundle along with four other games, so it felt like it was free.

Now I can really answer the question, "But what about games?" when encouraging people to give Linux a try. Way back when, I used to play SimCity under Win, but never looked for a comparable Linux replacement. Excellent coverage of what's available.
  • helifino Sep 11, 2009 @ 2:49 am | delete
Warzone 2100 was one of the better (in my opinion) RTSGs, and was released as open source a while back (all but the cut scene video format, but that was recently fixed, too). OS version has both campaign and multiplayer skirmish modes. http://wz2100.net

I have covered that point in my comparison Simutrans vs OpenTTD | Linux Transport Simulation Showdown.
  • dannystaple Jul 10, 2009 @ 2:03 am | in reply to Gavin | delete
That is correct. I have started investigating simutrans, for which the graphics are also free. I will be writing about that shortly...
  • Gavin Jul 10, 2009 @ 1:46 am | delete
Only the OpenTTD engine is free. You need the graphics from an original version of the game which are NOT free.
  • Mixomycetes Mar 30, 2010 @ 3:21 am | delete
In the mean while, open source alternatives for the graphics (and the sounds) of the game are available too (called OpenGFX). This means that the OpenTTD can now be played without the original TTD-graphics.

I love the simple math based games on ubuntu. biniax 2, untangle, bridges and map for instance.
  • Alien Jul 6, 2009 @ 3:56 am | delete
    UFO: Alien Invasion!
    http://ufoai.ninex.info/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

It's a clone of the old XCOM games but better in many respects. It is turn based like XCOM1-2 but uses a 3D engine instead of bitmap. It's got sound and music. The AI is quite good with ambushes and everything. Weapon effects are very well done too. There's also a lot of variety in scenario terrain.

    What about NeverBall and NeverPutt.
Also, Falcon's Eye has been a dead project since 2001, what about Vulture's Eye?
    What about battle for wesnoth?
    What about FreeCiv?
    What about Pingus?
OOlite, UrQuan masters, Cube, Cave Story, Tower Toppler, LBreakOut, FreeCol etc.
