Best Gaming Graphics Cards for the Money 2012

Ranked #100 in Computers & Electronics, #1,321 overall

2012 Value NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon Graphics Cards

You can have the best built machine in the world but without a solid graphics card you'll reach a bottleneck while gaming. This is because creating the latest 3D image out of binary data for today's demanding games is a difficult process, and if your GPU can't handle it, then you'll be stuck on the sideline.

In this post I'll review the best rated nVidia GeForce and Radeon video cards for the money so you can see where you can get the most value or bang for your buck. I'll also give you a chance to vote for your favorite cards and brand/manufacturer.

How to choose a gaming graphics card

Before heading straight into my GPU picks I wanted to discuss some of the more important aspects of choosing a good gaming video card. Here's a few steps to follow.

Check the required specifications:

Some types of games are more demanding than others. If you plan on playing the latest FPS game, then you should expect the graphics to be considerably more demanding than an update to your MMORPG. Remember to check the specifications on the game you want to play and look at the minimum requirements as well as the requirements to run the game at its highest settings.

How much should you spend?

Again, this depends on the games you play. If you plan on always playing the latest video games, then I recommend you spend between $200-300 every couple of years to stay on top of it. This seems to give you a better overall value than spending $400-600 on the latest GPU and then waiting 4 years to switch it out. If you don't have the cash, then you usually can get away with an older card that's $100-150 by turning down the settings on your game.

Avoid the Bottleneck

My last piece of advice is that you avoid a bottleneck in the two pieces of hardware that matter most, your CPU and video card. A good way to do this is by spending a similar amount on each of them. In other words, its better to pair the i7-2600k with the GTX 560 ti, then pair an i3 processor with a GTX 670 for the same price. There may be exceptions to this rule, but my main point is to not let your CPU become the bottleneck.

I don't have any brand loyalty, it all comes down to whatever company provides the best price/performance ratio at the time I am buying. The only wrench in the gears comes when I want a specific set up, like triple monitor support off one GPU. In that case AMD is the only option in town.

The GTX 460 is a great card, but since the 560 came out it became a better option. I have the 460 in a separate rig that I use for another computer that I've pieced together for my kids; however, I would no longer recommend it as a new purchase.

Nice read, i muist admit that the GTX 460 doesn't seem like such a good GPU on your lens, but it's really good i have one in my machine and i the performance is amazing, its a high-mid range GPU in terms of price but it is very good and i would highly reccomend it. Quick fact, did you know that there is actually no hardware differenceb etween certain GT/GTX models and their original counterparts, all nVidia does it under clock the GTX model to make a GT and a standard version, cool fact. Huh?
