Finding the Best Gaming Laptops of 2012
As a serious gamer, you are naturally very particular about the kind of gaming platform you want. It has to operate smoothly without delays in the action, render up the latest and most awesome graphics technology, and give you full control over the games you play. Which gaming laptop is right for you? Well, here's a rundown of some of the newest and coolest gaming laptops of 2012.
Best Gaming Laptops By ASUS
ASUS Republic of Gamers G74SX-AH71 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)
Amazon Price: $1,260.00 (as of 05/28/2012)![]()
This ASUS Republic of Gaming laptop features a 17.3-inch LED-backlit full HD display, a 2nd generation Intel Core i7-2670QM processor with Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 Technology, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M graphics with 3GB GDDR5 VRAM for DirectX graphics, and ASUS Power4Gear Hybrid technology to boost your battery life. It rates 4.5 out of 5 stars in 19 Amazon reviews. Pros include graphics so good that a professional graphic designer recommended it, improved performance over earlier ASUS gaming computers, and a good balance between quality and price. Another plus was the number of USB ports compared to other laptops.
Major gripes mostly had to do with the keyboard/touchpad combination. One reviewer had to hit buttons dead-on to get them to register. Another commented that the touchpad seemed to be a tad too sensitive. A second gripe had to do with the wireless capability. One didn't like the lack of a wireless display and another seemed to have trouble with his wireless card.
Overall, a smooth laptop for gamers who have less than $1500 to spend on a gaming computer.

Best Gaming Laptops By Alienware
Alienware AM18X-8636BK 18-Inch Laptop (Space Black)
Amazon Price: $1,979.99 (as of 05/28/2012)![]()
Alienware has taken a good chunk of the gaming laptop market, and for good reason. These are the producers of the high-end gaming laptop and they back it up with this laptop with a 2.2-GHz Intel Core processor, 8 GB DIMM, 750 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive and an 18" screen. The single reviewer rated it 5 stars, liked the fact that it doesn't overheat the way many high-powered laptops do, and commented that even though he lived in a foreign country where U.S.-manufactured laptops might not get full functionality without adapters, it actually did quite well.
Best Gaming Laptops By Toshiba
Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7380 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop - Fusion X2 Finish in Red Horizon
Amazon Price: $1,144.62 (as of 05/28/2012)![]()
This offering from Toshiba gets an impressive 2.4-GHz Intel Core processor that can be boosted up to 3.0 GHz with Turbo Boost technology, 6GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM, a 640-GB SATA Hard Disk Drive, and a 17.3" screen. It rates 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon. With the amount of goodies packed into this laptop, expect it to be heavy at 7.5 pounds. One reviewer commented that it compared favorably to his HP, with a backlit keyboard, good sound and the ability to turn the touchpad off when he wasn't using it. He did worry that the power source could come loose in the future but it did well out of the box. One reviewer did comment that it did get hot while playing games though it was a pretty good laptop for the price. Another griped about a lemon of a hard drive that forced him to send it back to Toshiba for repairs. Overall, 4.5 out of 5 stars should tell people that this is a solid product for a cheap price.
Choosing A Gaming Laptop
- Consider your budget. Most gaming laptops range from $1000 to $2000, depending on the model, manufacturer and features. Consider whether you can save up that much in a reasonable amount of time, before the gaming laptop you're eyeballing becomes obsolete.
- Pay attention to customer reviews. Your fellow gamers are likely to be as discerning as you are and are pretty good at giving candid reviews of gaming laptops on Amazon. Keeping in mind that it's always possible to get a lemon, a laptop with a 4-star rating and up with multiple reviews is obviously pretty good.
- Look at the processor speed, graphics card and RAM capability. As a general rule, the higher the numbers are, the better your laptop will be at handling your favorite games but the more high-end stuff will be more expensive. Look for one with a good amount of VRAM, or video memory. A good processor and graphics card will render your games at the level you expect without slowing you down or freezing.
- Look for one that won't become overheated with extensive play. As a general rule, heat means damage to your laptop. Make sure you find one with a good internal fan and ventilator grid that will allow the heat to dissipate and keep your laptop in an area that is well-ventilated.
