Favourite Gingerbread Cookie Cutters - Gingerbread Men, Gingerbread Ladies and Gingerbread Houses

I have been amazed at the variety of gingerbread cookie cutters available. There are gingerbread men cookie cutters; cutters for gingerbread houses; gingerbread ladies; and a wide variety of other shapes. There are also cheap metal cutters and more expensive, but safer, plastic gingerbread cookie cutters. There are even alternatives which don't use a cutter!

I have put together a collection to illustrate the wide range of cutters available to help you make your choice. This is a family-orientated lens so I haven't featured some of the novelty and speciality cookie cutters. If you would like one of these, then please search in Google. I have just selected from the ordinary cookie cutters sold by Amazon.

My Favourite Gingerbread Cookie Cutter ....

... isn't a cutter at all!

Rather than use a cutter, why not just roll out your gingerbread dough into a mold which you can put straight into the over. It's silicone so it's easy to keep clean - it's dishwasher safe. The tray I have featured has 24 individual gingerbread me which is much easier than having to stamp out 24 separate cookies and for small cookies like this there is a risk that some legs will drop off if they are cut out and your dough isn't quite the right consistency.

I think this is a wonderful alternative to traditional gingerbread cookie cutters.

Personally I prefer the newer silcione trays, but some people still prefer the older style of metal tray. As well as avoiding sharp edges and easier to use (in my personal opinion), trays also can add some decoration to the body of gingerbread me, in this case some buttons.

Gingerbread Man Shaped Plastic Cutter

This cutter is much safer for children. Amazon suggest it is suitable for children of five and upwards, but they should obviously be supervised by an adult. It is made from food safe plastic.

For family use, I personally would always use either a mold or a plastic cutter like this.

Cast Iron Mold

Cast Iron Mold for a Gingerbread House

I prefer silicone molds but if you want a metal mold then cast iron might be your choice and of course it will last extremely well if taken care off. There are a couple of issues:

a) the mold is heavy and won't suit anybody who finds carrying weight diffucult; and

b) you need to make the pieces from both sides so you probably need to move the pieces off onto a separate baking tray to bake.

Metal Cutters - Gingerbread House Parts

This set of cutters will help you to stamp out the parts to make a gingerbread house. Personally I prefer the tray molds because they can add texture to the surface, but that may not matter if youare intending to use thick royal icing to decorate your gingerbread house.

Metal Mold

Metal Gingerbread House Mold

This double-sided metal mold can make the parts for a gingerbread house and gingerbread men. They show a picture of what a house could look like - if you are very good at decoration. I've shown it below as well. Feedback from people how have used the tray includes:

a) there are better gingerbread recipes than those in the pack - maybe try the one on my own Beautiful Gingerbread Houses lens;

b) flour the tray to stop the gingerbread dough sticking to it;

c) use the tray as a mold but remove the pieces and bake them on a separate baking tray; and

d) the gingerbread men aren't a success - use a separate cutter.

NB the mold only makes half of the pieces you need to make a gingerbread house. Either use it twice as described above (athough this can be fiddly) or buy two trays!
