The Monster Hits of Halloween

As October rolls around each year, there is one thing of which you can be sure - Halloween is on the horizon!

As the stores fill their shelves with candy, costumes and decorations, people's attention is directed towards ghosts, ghouls, witches, pumpkins and all things frighteningly cute or just plain horrific.

Parties and trick or treating are arranged, food is prepared - but what is better to put you in the Halloween mood than turning on the radio or slipping in your favorite CD of Halloween music.

Featured here are some easily recognizable standards of the season, along with a sprinkling of newer ones...these are Halloween's Greatest Hits!

As she emerged from the broken down vehicle, the darkness enveloped her as she tried to focus on the strange landscape that appeared to be watching her predicament.

She hurriedly glanced back in the car, praying that the flashlight she had stored in the console had enough power to light her way to safety. She stretched in through the broken window, trying to avoid any jagged glass and pulled open the compartment. Her hand groped among old papers until she felt that cold metal of hope, flicked the switch, and sighed as a beam of light shone through the windshield.

As the light stabbed its way through the darkness, not far in the distance, she noticed the glint of what appeared to be the windows of a deserted diner, long since abandoned by its owners and customers. She approached the building, moving quietly as if the lonely night would hear her faltering footsteps. A weather beaten door beckoned her as if it knew her plight, yet offering no solace.

She turned the handle and pushed against the rotting wood, the door opening with a painful screech, allowing her to enter. Breathing deeply, she stepped into a suffocating darkness, broken only by the fading beam from her flashlight. As she glanced around, her attention was drawn to what appeared to be an old fashioned jukebox.

Suddenly, its multicolored lights began to dimly flicker. She heard herself gasp as the crackling sound of a stylus hitting a record broke the silence. The lights from the jukebox grew stronger and flitted across the ceiling and walls. In that moment she heard shuffling feet behind her and quickly spun around on her heels. In the glow of red, purple, green and yellow she could see shadowy figures emerging from the far side of the room....arms outstretched.

She stepped slowly backwards, unable to believe what she was witnessing, until her groping hands grabbed on to the side of the jukebox. She glanced down, suddenly mesmerized by the spinning disc. The shuffling figures continued to approach as the fear inside of her began to reach fever pitch.

The crackling from the jukebox was suddenly accompanied by familiar music...the rattling of chains, the beat of a drum....and the shuffling suddenly stopped as the strange inhabitants began to move at a quicker pace, inviting her to join them.

The last thing she remembered was seeing the label on the record in the jukebox..."Halloween's Greatest Hits!"
