Looking for the Best Hand Creams?

What are the best hand creams?

I'm always trying new products, and one of the things I'm constantly trying out is different hand creams. I live in the Northeast, and our winters get pretty cold pretty fast. I'm also obsessed with washing my hands to keep from getting sick, so I usually wake up one day with craked and dry hands, not realizing how it's happened.

This winter I tried several different hand creams, and have found a number of favorites at various price points. Read on for the winners.

Neutrogena's Norwegian Formula, Unscented

Best Budget Hand Cream

If you don't have a lot of money to spend, the best product I've found is Neutrogena's Norwegian Formula, Unscented. This is a thick and heavy cream, so you don't need to use a lot. It will last you a whole winter and into the spring. I like to use it at night before bed. It also absorbs really well after a minute or so. The price is very reasonable for a 2 ounce container. I love that it's unscented as well. It's always good to avoid unnecessary scents if you can.

Bonus: you can take it on a plane with you!

La Mer's The Hand Treatment

Best Hand Cream Splurge

There's a reason La Mer products are so expensive -- it's because they are so amazing. Just as people swear by the facial moisturizer, people won't give up The Hand Treatment. At over $100 a tube, it's not cheap. But if you are looking for a splurge, this is what you want. Silky smooth and instant absorption make it the best of the best. It's also been said that it can reduce aging in your hands.

The biggest problem is that if you splurge for this once, you won't want to go back to the other creams, so be aware that you will be hooked.

Aveeno Active Naturals

Best Daytime Hand Cream

Aveeno's hand lotion is very lightweight, with a pleasant scent. It's perfect for daytime. It absorbs super quickly, and can be used frequently throughout the day. My personal favorite is the Colloidal Oatmeal lotion, which smells delicate and rubs in quickly. Oatmeal has many healing properties, so when you have cracked and dry skin, this is perfect.

Aveeno is a great brand of natural products that are easy to find and at a decent price. I love their stuff.

Weleda's Skin Food

Best Nighttime Hand Cream

Weleda's Skin Food is extremely heavy and thick. This does not absorb quickly, but it's perfect for overnight. It will heal the most cracked and dry skin with just a single night. It is serious stuff. The smell is not the best; sometimes I feel like I'm drinking a gin and tonic after I've applied it, but it's worth it.

It's particularly good to use with cotton gloves for additional moisturizing properties.

L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand Creme

Best Gift Hand Cream

Shea Butter Hand Cream (5.2 oz.)

Buy the best at Dermstore! L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream (5.2 oz.)

My favorite hand cream to give as a gift (or receive as a gift) is L'Occitane's Shea Butter Hand Creme. This is really a fantastic hand cream. I send it every year to my mom, who lives in a dry climate, and I think she's starting to expect it! Shea butter has extremely moisturizing properties, and nowhere is it more obvious than this phenomenal product. It feels fantastic as soon as you start applying it and absorbs quickly. It feels luxurious on the skin. The only problem is that I have a tendency to use too much because it feels so good!

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream

Best Cream for Hands and Face

First Aid Beauty is my current favorite product for moisturizing my face, but it's great for use on your hands and body as well. It's perfect for those with sensitive skin, and people with KP, rosacea, excema, and other various skin issues swear by it. I have pretty sensitive skin on my face (usually I use oil-free, but tried this based on a recommendation) and haven't had any breakouts. It's very moisturizing.

It has a slight menthol smell, so be warned. It soaks in very quickly, though, and the smell won't be noticeable after a few seconds.

Gold Bond Sanitizer and Moisturizer

Best Hand Cream and Sanitizer

This product solves the ever-present problem of hand sanitizer that dries up your hands. Gold Bond has a fantastic product that combines both sanitizer and moisturizer in one step. It moisturizes your hands as well as a traditional hand cream, but it also gets rid of 99% of germs at the same time. What could be more perfect than that? Not only will your hands look younger and healthier, you will be reducing your risk of getting sick.

I have indulged in the La Mer hand cream and would choose it all the time, but L'Occitaine Shea Butter hand cream is a brilliant substitute at a considerably happier price!
