We have all heard the story of the guy who bought the expensive TV and when he tried gaming on it, all he could see was a blur. That might not happen frequently anymore, but many expensive TVs are still bad at displaying games.
To help you pick a good gaming TV I will shortly review the top new gaming HDTV on the market and then I will take a look at a budget alternative.
Some points to keep in mind
To help you pick a good gaming TV I will shortly review the top new gaming HDTV on the market and then I will take a look at a budget alternative.
Some points to keep in mind
- If you sit very close to a very large screen it's not going to look good. If you sit further back a larger screen will work better.
- Video Inputs: The cable connections you utilize in between your console and HDTV may make a significant difference in clarity. The PS3 is best when linked utilizing its built in HDMI, the 360 may be linked via HDMI or Component cables. The Wii links utilizing Composite or Component cables and doesn't produce a HD signal, but does reap the benefits of higher resolution HDTVs.
Top Rated HDTV for Gaming 2012
Panasonic VIERA TC-P55GT30 55-Inch 1080p 3D Plasma HDTV
Normally when I do background research on gaming hardware, I find that professional reviewers have many different opinions as to the best product. Not so in this case, almost everyone, who know their gaming HDTVs, recommend the Panasonic VIERA.The Panasonic VIERA has excellent 2D display quality based on exact and natural colors, strong black levels akin to this year's other high-end models, exceptionally quick response time, and low phosphor trailing. The shadow detailing on the VIERA GT30 is high, that guarantees great-looking movies and games. The VIERA GT30 has some reported issues with banding (colors not perfectly separated) but it's barely noticable in my opinion.
3D display quality is stunning as well, the best currently available. If you look at crosstalk it's the same as last year's VT20/VT25 model but VIERA GT30 has a 3D THX mode which insures exact colors in your 3D movies. 3D glasses are purchased separately.
Plasma panels are manufactured from glass and for that reason reflection can be an issue. The VIERA GT30 features a top notch anti-reflective display and coating, even with bright daylight the graphic quality was highly detailed and the black was rich and intense. This is significant due to the fact that many plasma HDTVs find it difficult to produce the same high standard of display quality in bright environments.
The HDTV has - like the majority of Panasonic's other new TVs - a lot of handy multimedia functions built-in. Firstly the USB recording functionality (on EU models) and DLNA that allows you to stream video, pictures and audio from other electronic products. However the most exciting new addition is Viera Market and Viera Connect, that is Panasonic's"App" Internet platform and"App store".
The VIERA comes in 50, 55, 60 and 65 inches.

The HDTV isn't just cheaper, with the LED tech it is brighter and uses less power than the plasma monitor I reviewed above.

Motion blur is a problem when gaming on a LED LCD TVs The LG TV uses this video processing feature to generate new frames inbetween existing ones. This greatly reduces motion blur during quick action for instance in first person shooters.

- I just bought the LG 42LV4400 42-inch and the picture looks good when going from VGA to VGA and from HDMI to cable. HOWEVER, when I plug the Wii or my PS2 into the "compontent" slot aka RCA slots, the picture is God awful. It looks like the old days when you didn't have cable and didn't have a good reception. I just can't understand why this is happening.

- Good idea for a lens! Manufacturers should be making a line specifically aimed at gamers at this point. I rarely watch tv and spend most of my "tv" time gaming.
