Holidays In Greece: So Many Choices, So Little Time

My Greek Holidays: Where To Go, What To Do?
While planning this year's vacation, I find myself faced with the usual dilemma: where to go? Surely, I know how I like spending my summer (or winter, or fall/spring, for that matter). I also know many places where I could fulfill my heart's desires. That's just the point: how to choose between all the fabulous places to go in Greece?
Sound organisation makes for successful holiday plans. Sorting out among the many different options is a first step towards some unforgettable days on this odd little corner of Southern Europe.

River Voidomatis, Epirus.
I haven't been there yet, but I look forward to walking along its course.
In Greek mythology, Rivers were lesser gods. Spercheios and Acheloos, for instance, were much revered in ancient times. Maidens sometimes visited their banks and river-gods, enchanted by their beauty or other qualities, appeared and seduced them.
Greek mythology is a corpus of stories which can be read (heard) as fairy tales or, more than that, as a cultural relic bearing many layers of historical, sociological, philosophical, artistic, etc data. Mythology is one of the tools used for reconstructing mentally more remote ages, for which historical (written) data are not available.
Time flows, just like a river.
Herakleitos* (Heraclitus) used to say that no one can enter the same river twice - because water is always young, I guess.

HAVE A NICE SUMMER 2011
Aegean Islands - The Cyclades
Amorgos, Ios, Santorini.
The Cyclades are tops of prehistoric mountains towering over a prehistoric plain which was submerged under salty water after the last glaciation period.
Today they are windswept, quasi-bare and rocky. In the past they were also windswept, but far more greener. I once read a book about the island of Paros being covered with forests. Archaeology and paleontogy sometimes bring us face-to-face with images and realities hard for us to reconstruct. But that's just one beauty of these sciences, after all.

Walking on the island of Syros.
Cyclades is essentially a necklace of bare rocks basking under the warm sun
and the clear blue sky of the Eastern Mediterranean.

This blue, green, sometimes violet, at times even steel-grey sea (did I mention about the generous strokes of gold that the sun paints on its restless surface?) is supposedly named after the mythical king Aegeus, father of Athenian hero Theseus. In fact, the name -- Aegean -- comes from a root-word, pronounced ages and ages ago by the lips of those living here, which means 'rushing, impetuous movement', 'waves'. This same root is used to form the modern Greek word for 'storm'.

Realizing the continuity of the Greek language through the ages brings me closer to those ancestors hidden by the mists of time. For I can still read a text, written thousands of years ago on this southernmost corner of Europe and of the Balkan peninsula, and recognize a multitude of words and word-roots I employ to communicate with modern Greeks.
Amorgos

Katapola bay, Amorgos.
It's been almost ten years since I was there.
The lady scanning the sea might be waiting for me to arrive, even though I don't really recognize her. Most probably, though, she's awaiting a father, brother, or fiance making a living by those impetuous waves - which, fortunately enough, do not bring pirates and enemy fleets on the shores anymore. Life of islanders is a common thread uniting a substantial part of Greece's population.

Rakomelo
Two shots for the cough, three shots for the cold, four.....

Raki + Honey (Meli) = Rakomelo
Warm mixed alcoholic beverage. Initially it was used as a domestic cure for a sore throat. The Cyclades and Crete, traditionally areas of raki production, serve rakomelo to warm the bodies and hearts of guests. I'd love to sit once again on Aighiali beach of Amorgos with the gentle murmur of the waters licking the shore and the crimson sky reflecting itself on the sea, sipping a glass of rakomelo. Sometimes, a few good friends may drop by and night quickly draws near, with chatting and laughing and boiling some more rakomelo in the little pot.
Rakomelo Recipe
Basic stuff, the easy-to-go version. Yes, we're on wikipedia!
There are also more gourmet recipes for rakomelo, in which herbal teas are combined with the alcohol and sweetener. They take a little longer to prepare and need a couple more materials. Soon to be with you...
Ios

Chora, Central Square, Ios. By plusgood, in Flickr.
West of Amorgos and to the North of Santorini, the blue lagoons of Ios stretch their golden beaches under the sun. The island is famed for its great number of churches and chapels, and also for being the place where Homer, the poet of the Iliad and the Odyssey, drew his final breath.

During the last decades, youths from all around the world meet on Ios to revel at the numerous bars and clubs of the island. If one prefers to enjoy its beauty in peace and quiet, (s)he'd better avoid the months of July and August, as they are considered the high season for holidays in Greece.
To roast or not to roast?
While I was a student, I spent several summers on Ios with friends. We used to say jokingly that the highest tree growing on the island was parsley.
Of course, this is not entirely true - still, it illustrates in a somewhat exaggerated manner the bareness of those otherwise spectacular islands.

Santorini

Thira, Santa Irene, Santorini - three names, one island.
Archaeology, sightseeing, unique wines from vines grown on its volcanic soil, spectacular beaches, nightlife. The island has long been a popular destination and it has developed accordingly, balancing traditional colour and tourist service in a fragile poise.
Take a look at the following pages to start acquiring a small taste of what Santorini is about:

Santorini: Live The Dream
To Old Or To New?
I love the Cyclades. I love the sun, the refreshing water, the goats climbing the steep rocky slopes, the occasional well or fountain saving the wayfarer from the heat of the day, the frantic choir of the cicada at high noon, the clear starry nights by the lapping waves.
Greece is defined by sea. Even for one living on the mountains of mainland, shores are but a few hours at the most from any town or village. Of course, in days of old transport was not as easy and, as a result, there must have been some highlanders who would rarely, if ever, set foot on the shores. There is an ancient story illustrating this reality of constant proximity to the sea, that goes as follows:

Poseidon, God of Sea? A fisherman?
Ulysses, hero of the Odyssey, was persecuted by the sea god Poseidon for blinding his son, the Cyclop. During a quest in the Underworld, Odysseus (Ulysses) was instructed by seer Teiresias to search for a place where people would not know what sea was, to stop there and sacrifice to the god. So, he took an oar and went way inland to find, at last, a plowman who thought it was some peculiar kind of spade. Poor Greek hero, warrior king and mariner, stained by sea salt, haunted by the Mighty Sea and its creatures - trying to expiate himself and break free of Poseidon's revenge.

Odysseus and his companions blinding the Cyclop.
Earthware (cylix) from Lakonia, Peloponese (yes, that's Spartan land), 6th century BC.
Sea iodine is good for health. Swimming is one great exercise for the whole body. Fresh fish eaten just a few hours after being fished out of clear waters is highly recommended by all nutritionists. All these and more - culture, entertainment, welcoming people - I can find, if I only go to Piraeus and then ride (??) the Aegean waves to the windy Cyclades islands.
The flip-side: Mountains of Epirus
BUT... (isn't there always a 'but' getting in the way?) - Budget is very tight this year, allowing for no more than a single destination. And I've never been at Epirus, the mountainous region at the North-West of Greece. What could I look for over there? Let's count: Traditional villages of exquisite beauty; natural habitats, endless occasions for hiking and adventure sports, wildlife; mountains diving spectacularly into the sea; maritime towns full of life and local colour; archaeological and historical sites and monuments; and, of course, the usual assortment of delicacies, wines, and all those temptations that add taste to our lives.

The town of Arta is encircled by river Arachthos (Arach-thos, one of those Greek words). This stone bridge was initially constructed during the Hellenistic era (3rd century BC). The bridge was rebuilt in the early 17th century with funds provided by a rich merchant from Arta.
I have also heard of a legend associated with the building of the Arta bridge - works were delayed, because whatever the builders accomplished during the day, it was destroyed every night. Cherchez la femme, bref, the beautiful wife of the chief stone mason had to be sacrifised (built into the foundations, I think) for the construction to stand.
