I do believe animals come into our lives for a reason. And though sometimes a particular animal may not be what we wanted at the time. It undoubtedly is what we needed. There are most certainly lessons that we learn about ourselves whenever we spend time in the presence of horses.

If I Had a Horse: How Different Life Would Be

I really enjoyed this book. It's a good read with lots of content as well as quotes. But it's undeniable best feature is the photography. Also the accompanying DVD was very enjoyable. It's full of stunning horses playing and just being horses set to beautiful music.
I love the big horses and the book and DVD showcase some of the most stunning Friesians and Gypsy Horses, hair and hooves flying. There are also gorgeous Arabian stallions, thoroughbreds and many more.
This truly would make an excellent gift for any horse lover.
Equus by Tim Flach
Art & Photography Horse Books
Tim Flach has created a visually stunning book in Equus. It's simply breathtaking. His photographs range from capturing horses in their native land, like Icelandic Horses galloping along a beach filled with chunks of ice and a glacier in the background. From their his work suddenly changes to zooming in to one aspect of the horse so closely that at first glance you lose the identity of the horse. You see the soft sloping or curve of the neck or rump. Or perhaps merely a whiskery muzzle. This book in all way celebrates the horse.

Vavra's Vision: Equine Images
Art & Photography Horse Books
Vavra photographs horses with a sensitivity and passion that catapults his books past that of mere photos into art that grabs you from an emotional place. He accompanies most of his book with enchanting quote about horses to complete the genuine admiration he feels towards these animals.
Robert Vavra's books are a perfect gift for any artist or horse lover.

Horses
Art & Photography Horse Books
The book displays over 200 stunning photographs by Arthus-Bertrand. He has traveled the world taking photographs of horses proud and humble, purebred and wild. Horses is filled with unique and rare horses from all over the world. Often they are depicted with their proud owners. There is an insight that one gets when seeing a beautiful stallion held by a native man from some village half way around the world.
Bertrand also has a knack for showcasing the traditional portrait style photograph complete with canvas backdrop, but then he pans out so you can see all the native countryside and extra people and goings-on from behind the scenes. It's almost like when Dorothy looked behind the curtain in the wizard of Oz. All The magic is revealed..
This is a really great photo exploration of horses from all over the globe.

Spirit Horses
Art & Photography Horse Books
Spirit Horses is a photographic essay of the essence of the horse by equine photographer Tony Stromberg. His photos are infused with light and atmosphere.
The book is a good sized coffee-table book filled with color, black & white and sepia tone photos as well as quotes. I like that many of the horses are natural horses and not show-ring models of perfection. It is with these horses he captures the beauty and eloquence of that which is equine.

Horses: Photographs by Michael Eastman
Art & Photography Horse Books
A self-taught photographer Michael Eastman has photographed a wide range of subjects. For this book though, he focuses his lens on the greatness that is the horse.
This is not the usual coffee table book of horse photographs. Michael Eastman does not do the traditional horse photography and many of the images are manipulated and adjusted for a truly artistic photographic vision of the horse.
"All animals are wonderful, but horses are truly mythic." - Michael Eastman.

There is a consideration, and a general duty of humanity, that binds us not only to the animals, which have life and feeling, but even to the trees and plants.
We owe justice to men, and kindness and benevolence to all other creatures who may be susceptible of it.
There is some intercourse between them and us, and some mutual obligation.

The Man Who Listens to Horses: The Story of a Real-Life Horse Whisperer

The Man Who Listens to Horses
I've read most of Monty Robert's book. And while there are some rumors of him being a bit of a fraud in regards to his claims about his personal life, I can tell you that he offers truly excellent insight into the workings of the equine mind.
I found his thoughts on equine communication quite enlightening and I tried many of his techniques including "join-up" with my horse when he was just a young 2 year old.
Through his books I deepened the bond my horse and I share and by taking this slower more gentle approach undoubtedly kept from being seriously hurt in those early years because of his techniques.

Whole Heart, Whole Horse: Building Trust Between Horse and Rider

Mark Rashid explains in his book Whole Heart, Whole Horse: Building Trust Between Horse and Rider that we need to separate the belief that a horse not obeys a command is the horse trying to be willful or difficult. He explains that has think differently and trying to define horses by the way humans think is an incorrect assumption and doomed to failure.
Mark says "If we understand that horses can't separate the way they feel from the way they act, then we can start to see that unwanted behavior isn't bad behavior at all.
More times than not, it's just the horse expressing the way he feels at that particular moment in time . . . . How we perceive that information dictates how we respond to it."

Horse, Follow Closely: Native American Horsemanship

enjoyed reading this book as well as still do occasionally go back to it. It was interesting to get the Native American take on horse training.
Again this was something I bought when I first got my green broke 2 year old horse. Now almost 15 years later he's the love of my life and undoubtedly a better horse for reading these natural horsemanship books.

The Soul of a Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd

This book is more about horse communication than actual Natural horsemanship training methods. But it's an interesting read for anyone looking to develop a deeper bond with their own horses by learning the horses own language.
The author Joe Camp, perhaps best known for his touching story of Benji, has now opened up his world to tell the story of his experiences with a band of wild horses. We follow along as he gains their trust and begin to understand the subtleties that make up equine communications.
Joe perhaps goes a little too far in what he believe acceptable care for horses is, indicating that blanketing, shoeing and a few of the more usual practices of horse keeping are unnecessary and borderline abuse. I'm unsure how I feel about that ideal since anyone who works with their horse in a professional manner is bound stable them and shoe them.
Beyond that there is a wealth of wisdom to be learned here on equine communication. And Joe tells it in the same heartwarming fashion that we remember from telling of the Benji story.

The Natural Horse: Foundations for Natural Horsemanship

In his book lifelong farrier Jaime Jackson lifelong farrier Jaime Jackson shares his knowledge of what he calls "the natural horse."
Jaime spent 10 years studying the wild horses learning their communication and natural way of being. He wanted to bring this information back in a useful and easy to use format. Even today so many horses are being mis-treated because owners just don't understand how to deal with the true nature of the horse.
This book challenges traditional thoughts on horse care and covers such topics as hoof care and balanced riding in concert with the horse's natural abilities. As well as new forms of communication and humane care.

Chosen by a Horse: How a Broken Horse Fixed a Broken Heart

As an equestrian artist I am often in deep conversations with people who have horse stories to share. This indeed is one of my favorite parts of being an animal artist. The sharing of stories and experiences with people of a like mind.
One of the reoccurring comments I hear so often is when the horse person says "You know I thought I was saving the horse. But in the end the horse saved me."
This is exactly what this book is about. The author Susan Richards adopted a half starved, abused and abandoned former racehorse. And the experience changed her life forever. You can follow the experience with all it's trials and tribulations and exalt in their successes.

Horse Novels
The Horse Whisperer
Horse Books - Horse Novels
This is the story of a young girl who survives a tragic accident that has left both her and her horse physically and emotionally scarred. It is recommended that the horse be put down as his injuries are so severe. But the girl's mothers understands that her daughter identifies with her wounded horses and she is as frightened and wounded as her horse is. So the mother undertakes a quest to find the horse trainer, in the belief that in healing the horse she will also somehow heal her daughter.
The book was later made into a movie starring Robert Redford. I've read both the book and seen the movie of the Horse Whisperer. As is so often the case, the books are always more enjoyable.
All The Pretty Horses
Horse Books - Horse Novels
All The Pretty Horses was awarded the prestigious National Book Award in 1992.
War Horse (Newmarket Pictorial Moviebook)
War Horse by Michael Morpurgo
Horse Books - Horse Novels
The story of Joey and English Farm horse set during the World War I era and is actually told from the horses perspective.
The story opens with Joey and the young son of the farmer developing a bond as the boy trains the horse. The reader then follows along as the horse is sold to the army where the horrors of war are only to real. So many horses died during World War I the sheer numbers are staggering. After one such battle where only a couple of horses survive a skirmish one being Joey, they are then later captured by the Germans.
I won't tell the whole story so as not to ruin it for you. The details of war are told in a realistic manner though some of the relationship aspect of the book is a little trite. None the less it's a great read and a unique take on horse stories in general.
