Best Jewish Music on Youtube

Ranked #3,315 in Music, #91,316 overall

My favorite Yiddish and Hebrew songs and singers.

I'm a nut for Yiddish so many of my favorites are in that language. But I'd like to learn about great songs in Hebrew too - so if you have a favorite please leave it in the "plexo" below. Thanks!

Picture: Molly Picon, who at the age of 40 was playing a sixteen-year-old girl! What a spirit!

I've added three of my son's favorites - the Idan Raichel project, Matisyahu, and the Fools of Prophecy.

I've also sprinkled a few of my band's own songs in Yiddish through the lens. You can listen for free or download them for 89 cents each!

Vot ken yu makh, s'iz Amerika!

This might be my favorite Youtube Yiddish song, it's in a sort-of Yinglish. The second verse translation: In the old country, people got married and then had babies, but in America it's the other way around. Everybody likes to save money so they have the marriage at the same time as the bris. The just-married couple comes home and there's the cradle with the kid already in it! What can you do? It's America!

The Pratie Heads perform "Mayn Shvester Khaye"

This beautiful song has lyrics by Binem Hiller and a tune by Chava Alberstein. Bob Vasile plays guitar in open tuning. We recorded this on our album "Rag Faire" and you can download Mayn Shvester Khaye from Amazon.

A Yiddish song I wrote: Epes fun gornisht

It means "something from nothing"

I just released a cd of Yiddish songs called "I Can't Complain - but sometimes I still do." It's available from Skylark Productions and you can preview all the songs, full-length, at our website Yiddish music in North Carolina. Here's the one song I wrote myself! From the very first concert Aviva and I did together.

Michael Alpert sings "Di Mashke"

This song makes fun a bit of the cantorial style by describing how you can't get through any of life's important moments without whiskey.

Joshua Nelson and the Klezmatics sing "Shnirele Perele"

This mystical, ecstatic Yiddish song is a favorite at KlezKamp. The Messiah sits at the head of the table, holding a goblet in one hand, with the other making a blessing over the whole world. Joshua Nelson comes in around the middle of the video.

Jane Peppler and Aviva Enoch with "Birobidzhan"

A song with a fascinating history

Stalin decided to move all the Jews of Russia to a town on the central asian steppe. This song says it will be a happy place to live, with lots of food and straw for your roof - and that nowhere have Jews laughed so much... see our website Yiddish music in North Carolina.

Chava Alberstein sings Melokhe Melukha

Aviva Enoch and Jane Peppler with "Di Elter"

A beautiful song about aging.

Oy mame, bin ikh farlibt!

"Oy, mama, am I in love!"

In Mappamundi's version bassist Robbie Link plays the klezmer boy that the singer falls in love with.

Molly Picon sings "Dos Lebn Iz a Tanz"

This isn't a great song but it's a great idea. A girl dances with her whole body, a young woman dances with her hips, as she gets older the married woman dances with her hands, an old woman dances by nodding her head.

Tayere Malkele - Jane Peppler and Beth Holmgren

"My dear Malkele"

My dear little Malka, hotter than the month of Tammuz...

Pianist is Stephen Smith.

Ofra Haza sings Rachamim

I chose this one not because it's my favorite song but because there's a donkey in the video. How did they get that donkey to stand still?

Fantastic! I am passionate about Yiddish culture. By the way, do you know the book "Contes du Yiddishland" (Tales from Yiddishland) by Ben Zimet? You could be interested. However, it was written in French, and I am afraid it has not been translated into English...
