#10 GREATEST KISS ALBUM - HOT IN THE SHADE (1989)
Hot in the Shade
Amazon Price: $4.58 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
In 1989 KISS released their last album of the 80's with "HOT IN THE SHADE".
To me this is an excellent album that never gets the credit that it deserves. "Rise to It", "Hide Your Heart" and "Forever" were the singles released and they are all personal favorites of mine but I think songs like "Cadillac Dreams", "Silver Spoon", "Love's a Slap in the Face", "King of Hearts" and "Betrayed" are all great tunes that I never get tired of hearing.
The album was slow to sell at first but then "Forever" was released and it was a monster hit for the band being it's overall highest charting single since 1976's "Beth".
Off the strength of "Forever" KISS hit the road with a massive stage show that was the biggest the band had done since it's LOVE GUN era hey day.

#9 GREATEST KISS ALBUM - ANIMALIZE (1984)
Animalize
Amazon Price: $5.18 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
1984's "ANIMALIZE" was the highest selling KISS album since 1979's "DYNASTY" going Platinum on the back of a major MTV and radio favorite "Heaven's On Fire".
KISS was truly back on the top of their game with this album and even had a MTV special live concert special that would also be released on home video.
"ANIMALIZE" featured yet another new KISS lead guitarist in Mark St John who replaced Vinnie Vincent but St John would stick around an even shorter time than Vincent as he was replaced after only a few shows into the "ANIMALIZE" world tour by Bruce Kulick due to a case of sudden onset arthritis.
This album has a great hard rocking sound and is generally considered to be the best of the 80's version of KISS.

#8 GREATEST KISS ALBUM - LICK IT UP (1983)
Lick It Up
Amazon Price: $4.21 (as of 05/29/2012)![]()
"LICK IT UP" was a new beginning for KISS as it was with this album that they re-invented themselves for the 80's by taking off their trademark makeup for the first time.
Also with this album Vinnie Vincent officially replaced Ace Frehley as the new lead guitarist and his influence was heavily felt on this album as he co-wrote several songs and brought a new style of lead guitar playing to the band.
My favorite songs on the album are "All Hell's Breaking Loose", "Exciter" and "Not for the Innocent" which are all killer tunes. Unfortunately this would be the only KISS album with Vinnie Vincent as the official lead guitarist as internal problems between him and the rest of the band caused him to be fired immediately following the "Lick it Up" tour.

#7 GREATEST KISS ALBUM - ROCK N ROLL OVER (1976)
Rock & Roll Over
Amazon Price: $2.92 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
"ROCK N ROLL OVER" was the follow up to the hugely popular and platinum selling album "DESTROYER". While "DESTROYER" was very heavily produced "ROCK N ROLL OVER" was a return to a more stripped down sound and features some of the best songs of the original KISS lineup including "I Want You", "Take Me", "Calling Dr Love", "Mr Speed" and "Makin Love".
KISS finished this album quickly and then returned to the road to continue a massive "Spirit of 76" tour.

#6 GREATEST KISS ALBUM - LOVE GUN (1977)
Love Gun
Amazon Price: $4.17 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
In 1977 KISS was truly on top of the world. Gallop had just declared them the "Most Popular Rock Band in the World" and KISS was EVERYWHERE.
Released at the absolute peak of 1970's "KISSTERIA" the album kicks off with my all time favorite of KISS show openers "I Stole Your Love" an up tempo rocker that that has Paul Stanley on vocals and that has he and Ace Frehley trading lead guitar parts.
KISS live show staples "LOVE GUN" and "CHRISTINE SIXTEEN" are found here as well as the Ace Frehley classic "SHOCK ME" which was his first lead vocal on a KISS album.
Peter Criss also took a turn on the microphone with a song that he wrote called "HOOLIGAN" and Gene Simmons brings one of his creepiest songs ever to the table in "PLASTER CASTER" which I won't get into what that on is about.
My favorite song on the album is "TOMORROW AND TONIGHT" another hard rocking song in the party all night style of "ROCK N ROLL ALL NIGHT".
"LOVE GUN" shows the original KISS lineup at their peak and is a must own for any KISS fan.

#5 GREATEST KISS ALBUM - REVENGE (1992)
Revenge
Amazon Price: $6.87 (as of 05/29/2012)![]()
A full ten years after the release of "Creatures of the Night" the KISS release "REVENGE" from 1992 was another re-affirmation of what KISS was all about after a few years of albums that were a mixed bag of some great rock and some mediocre pop.
With "REVENGE" KISS was coming back to their hard rock roots with a kick you in the teeth, rock straight up your rear album that was their raunchiest and heaviest release ever.
Back in the fold with song writing credits was Vinnie Vincent who helped to make 'CREATURES OF THE NIGHT" and "LICK IT UP" among the best KISS albums.
Also this was the first KISS appearance of drummer Eric Singer who was taking over for Eric Carr who had lost his battle with cancer right before recording of the album started.
Singer was a more than worthy replacement displaying some killer drumming skills but the MVP of "REVENGE" was lead guitarist Bruce Kulick who was really allowed to cut loose and show his chops more than he ever had before. Kulick had been with KISS since 1984 and had played on several KISS albums but many times his guitar work was watered down in favor of a more popish sound but on "REVENGE" Kulick was encouraged to be as creative as he wanted to be and he really shines throughout this entire album showing that he may be the most under-rated guitarist ever in rock n roll.
Despite the fact that the original lineup is always considered to be the "real" KISS this album to me shows that musically the best lineup of KISS may have been this one..well or at least a close second to the original.
The album finishes with a nice tribute to Eric Carr with an instrumental written and performed by him.

#4 GREATEST KISS ALBUM - CREATURES OF THE NIGHT (1982)
Creatures of the Night
Amazon Price: $5.37 (as of 05/29/2012)![]()
List Price: $9.98
"CREATURES OF THE NIGHT" is my all time favorite KISS album. The only reason why this is not listed #1 is that it would be hard to argue that for historical purposes, sales and overall impact on the career of KISS that my picks for #1 through #3 would have to rank higher on the list of all time greatest KISS albums but for me and I know many other KISS fans nothing beats "CREATURES OF THE NIGHT."
KISS had just gone through a turbulent few years where Peter Criss had left the band and now despite being on the cover and officially still in the band Ace Frehley also had taken his leav from the band. Also KISS had strayed musically from the hard rock sound that made them popular and had delved into disco and pop sounding albums with "DYNASTY" and "UNMASKED" as well as a Pink Floyd type sounding concept album in "Music from the Elder" so "CREATURES OF THE NIGHT" was KISS kicking things back into high gear and showing the world that they could still rock as they released their heaviest sounding album ever.
With Eric Carr on drums finally allowed to really pound out the beat the way he had wanted to and with new lead guitarist Vinnie Vincent (he was not credited with being in the band until the next album) breathing new life into the song writing and the playing KISS is at their absolute best on this album.
My personal highlight is my all time favorite song "I LOVE IT LOUD" which is what first got me addicted to hard rock music.

#3 GREATEST KISS ALBUM - DESTROYER (1976)
Destroyer
Amazon Price: $2.94 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
List Price: $11.98
Used Price: $1.75
Considered by many to be the greatest KISS studio album it was the first KISS album to feature really top notch production which the band was able to afford after the big success that their last album KISS ALIVE was.
Produced by Alice Cooper "Welcome to my Nightmare" producer Bob Ezrin this was the first KISS album to make use of special effects and things like orchestras and strings for Beth and a boy's choir for Great Expectations.
This album features such classics as Detroit Rock City, Shout it Out Loud, God of Thunder and their all time biggest hit, the love song sung by Peter Criss - Beth.
My personal favorite song on the album is "God of Thunder" written by Paul Stanley but adapted to be a better fit for Gene Simmons and this actually ended up being one of Gene's signature live songs. The production of this song made gave it a spooky feel with lots of demonic type sonds that in reality were actually Bob Ezrin's small child who was running around the studio making a bunch of jibber jabber like kids do. Ezrin recorded him and than mixed it to make the eiry sounds that fill up the background of the song.
I also really love "King of the Night Time World" with the excellent double lead guitar work of Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley and than my other favorite "Do You Love Me" with Paul Stanley on lead vocals and Peter Criss shining on the backup vocals with his Rod Stewart type voice. I always thought this song had a Beatles type sound to it.

#2 GREATEST KISS ALBUM - ALIVE 2 (1977)
Alive 2
Amazon Price: $10.76 (as of 05/30/2012)![]()
List Price: $19.98
The follow up to the multi platinum selling ALIVE was released in 1977 after two more studio albums (Love Gun and Rock N Roll Over) and after the worldwide LOVE GUN tour which was by far the biggest KISS tour to date. In fact at the release of ALIVE 2 KISS was the most popular band in the world. They were the #1 touring act, were #1 with album sales and they were by far #1 with merchandise. In fact no other band including The Beatles or The Monkees had ever come close to the amount of merchandise that was being created and sold by KISS.
ALIVE 2 was again a 2 record release with three sides being live songs of of the LOVE GUN tour and the fourth side being new studio songs recorded exclusively for the ALIVE 2. The new songs include the fan favorites "Larger than Life" sung by Gene Simmons, "All American Man" sung by Paul Stanley and "Rocket Ride" sung by Ace Frehley.
ALIVE 2 is full of energy and fun much like the first ALIVE and the two go together perfectly.
My personal highlight of ALIVE 2 is when Peter Criss sings the love song "Beth" that transitions right into Gene Simmons's spooky bass solo which goes right into the darkest of all KISS songs "God of Thunder" which features a Peter Criss tribalistic drum solo in the middle which fits perfectly.

For me KISS ALIVE is the ultimate KISS album and a must own for ALL fans of Rock N Roll, not just KISS fans.
On this album all four original members of KISS - Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are young and at their energetic best playing like their lives depended on it and in a lot of ways they did as their first three studio albums had only moderate sales and the band was deep in debt from the cost of their live shows.
KISS lay it all on the line on this album and it truly pays off with a hard hitting set of all of their early favorite songs and the never tiring banter of front man Paul Stanley. KISS ALIVE stands the test of time and will ALWAYS be a rock classic.
