  • jimmyworldstar Feb 11, 2012 @ 7:26 am | delete
What type of laptop depends on what use you have it for. You'll want something with a good graphics card if you're playing games or doing photo/video work (although I'd suggest a desktop for that). If you're just surfing the internet and doing something simple, a lightweight laptop with lower specs and a longer battery life would be fine.

i recently bought an Apple Mac book pro, first apple and I am loving it. I run parallels desk top on it only because some of the websites that I edit and create use platforms at the host company that are not mac friendly. Parallels lets me seamlessly switch from window system to mac and back again without having to reboot and the lion operation system with multiple gestures on the touch pad are awesome, I don't miss my mouse but I do miss my touchpad when using my pc
  • mihgasper Jan 5, 2012 @ 1:45 pm | delete
It is interesting to see how are laptops developing. On one side there is trend of miniaturization (think about iPad and similar stuff), on the other we want comfort (bigger screens, more space for typing). I think integration of more devices in one is a trend to bet on.

  • bujes Jan 22, 2011 @ 7:06 am | delete

  • pkmcr Jan 22, 2011 @ 7:35 am | delete
Yes generally my experience and the popularity of other laptops means that I don't feature Dells amongst the Best Laptops for 2011

Well done! I'm having to replace my current Dell Laptop which has "worked hard" for quite a few years now. Last year, a storm killed my HP desktop, which are pretty decent machines. But I believe I'll stick with another Dell laptop as it is every bit as good as a desktop. I have really enjoyed my HP netbook far more than I thought I would too. Great job on this page!

The first thing i look for when buying a new laptop is the warranty that is offered with it. Often you can buy warranty extender packs allowing you to maximize the warranty to 3 years.

Personally i have stuck with Toshiba over the years. I have an old Toshiba laptop that is still kicking from 2006 with no prblems to date.
  • maryrussel Nov 20, 2010 @ 1:49 pm | delete

  • puzzlemaker Nov 20, 2010 @ 7:50 am | delete
We recently bought a computer and our family had LOTS of discussions for whether to get a laptop or a desktop. I voted 100% for a laptop since it is portable and I can take it on the go and use it while waiting for my daughter in her classes etc. I personally think laptops are the way to go. I was sadly outvoted. VERY informative article to help folks choose the right one. I'll get my laptop soon I hope :-).

Nice laptop computer review. I have never owned a PC, I got started on a Mac and never switched. I currently have a MacBook Pro 3.06 GHz and 8 GB RAM. I like it, but the battery does not last very long. Battery life is becoming more important to me lately as I become more mobile.
  • mcochs Nov 7, 2010 @ 6:47 pm | delete
Awesome lens-awesome selection! I'd have to go with the MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.4GHz
  • makingamark Nov 6, 2010 @ 6:05 am | delete
Can I suggest you put more options re Macs on this lens.

I have to confess I've sworn of PCs (this was after much swearing at!) and am now a devoted Mac follower after doing a poll on my blog and finding out how few techie problems Macs have.

Great lens!!! My parents, husband and I all use HP Pavilion laptops and love them. I've had mine for about 2 years now and it fits me like a glove. It's never given me any problems, travels well and is a nice size - not so big that it feels unwieldy and not so small that it seems like a toy.

There is a lot of good information in this lens. The part about how laptops can completely replace desktops is a very valid point. I might look into adding a section about how buying a laptop for business vs. for home/personal use is really not the same and that there are some very distinct differences between the consumer and business lines of these laptop brands. Keep up the good work!
  • Fitzcharming Aug 20, 2010 @ 10:30 am | delete
I bought a netbook earlier this year and it has some things I like and some things I'm not so happy with. Over all I'm happy to have it though. I'll be in the market for a new laptop soon I'm afraid so I'll be back. Thanks for the great info. And thanks for building so many lenses. I resisted getting a lap top for a long time, but now I would never go back to a desk top! It's so handy to take everywhere, and I'm amazed at how technology just keeps getting better and better. I have an Acer, and it's been fine, but next time will likely go with an HP.
